This position is based out of our Oak Ridge, TN office. About Us

Responsibilities

Be the single point accountability for design and engineering of new commercial nuclear fuel cycle projects, on time and on schedule. Lead design and engineering and/or owners engineer responsibilities for small modular reactor integration projects, nuclear fuel cycle facilities, etc. Manage a diverse design and engineering team dedicated to specific newbuild projects in the U.S. Serve as the principal technical authority on nuclear fuel cycle considerations for site design and integration. Lead multi-disciplinary engineering teams (nuclear, chemical, mechanical, civil, I&C, and safety) to ensure robust, integrated design solutions. Oversee development of technical baselines, system requirements, and interface control documents for nuclear fuel cycle-related systems. Provide direct technical input into conceptual, preliminary, and detailed engineering deliverables. Ensure review and approval procedures for analyses, calculations, and design documents for accuracy, compliance, and constructability. Lead assessments of front-end fuel cycle needs (uranium enrichment, fabrication, supply chain logistics). Guide back-end fuel cycle design and planning (used fuel handling, interim storage, waste disposition, and transportation). Integrate safeguards-by-design principles (NRC/DOE) into facility layout and systems. Provide oversight for conducting criticality safety evaluations, radiological consequence analyses, and material accountability studies. Ensure all fuel cycle-related activities align with U.S. regulatory frameworks, nonproliferation commitments, and appropriate standards. Provide technical oversight of site-specific engineering studies (geotechnical, hydrological, seismic, and environmental). Define system requirements and interfaces between nuclear island, balance-of-plant, and site infrastructure. Collaborate with EPC partners and SMR technology vendors to resolve technical integration challenges. Oversee preparation and review of technical input for licensing documents (e.g., FSAR, SAR, NEPA documentation, criticality safety evaluations). Ensure designs comply with NRC and ASME/ANS standards, as well as NQA-1 quality. Incorporate nuclear safety culture and conduct of engineering principles into daily work. Interface with regulators and technical reviewers to address questions and licensing issues. Troubleshoot complex engineering and fuel cycle problems, providing innovative, technically sound solutions. Mentor junior engineers and provide specialized training on nuclear fuel cycle systems and SMR integration. Stay abreast of emerging nuclear technologies, advanced fuels (HALEU, TRISO, MOX), and international best practices. Represent the organization in technical forums, working groups, and professional societies. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, civil/structural engineering, chemical engineering, or related discipline. 15+ years in nuclear fuel cycle technical work. At least 10 years in technical leadership roles. Deep understanding of the nuclear fuel cycle (front-end supply chain, enrichment / fabrication). Deep understanding of criticality safety analysis, radiation shielding, material control & accountability, and safeguards. Familiarity with NRC and international regulatory requirements for nuclear facilities. Experience with NQA-1 QA programs, licensing, and nuclear safety culture. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills, both within the AtkinsRéalis team and when interfacing with customers. Strong problem-solving skills and advanced presentation skills. Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office and project controls software. Expertise with design and integration of nuclear fuel cycle systems preferred. Master’s degree in nuclear engineering or a closely related field preferred. DOE/NQA-1 Quality Assurance & Nuclear Safety Training. PMP preferred. Must be a U.S. citizen to be considered. What We Offer
