Social Worker II - Part Time (Mon/Tues, Every Other Wed) - NICU. The Social Worker II fosters positive and professional interpersonal relationships with patients/families, physicians, hospital staff, community agency representatives and visitors, provides comprehensive psychosocial assessment for identified patients and, based on findings, facilitates interventions. Uses interpersonal communication to resolve conflicts and promote a healing environment. Demonstrates leadership and advanced clinical practice by mentoring junior staff, educating social work students and staff, and educating medical/nursing providers on topics that impact patient/family coping, family dynamics, de-escalation and staff coping. This part-time position supports patients and families in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) as part of a multidisciplinary team. The NICU social work team meets with all families who have a child admitted. The successful candidate should have strong crisis intervention skills, ability to build trusting relationships with a culturally diverse population, competencies in maternal mental health, grief and bereavement support, and knowledge of community resources. The work schedule is Monday, Tuesday, and every other Wednesday from 8:30am - 5pm. Responsibilities

Facilitate interventions based on assessment, requests of family and staff, and established timeframes. Facilitate the child protection process of assessment, referral, plan, and implementation, if appropriate. Provide follow-up services and assess outcomes of interventions. Document assessment and interventions in the patient’s medical record in accordance with departmental standards. Provide comprehensive psychosocial assessment for identified patients and families; develop intervention plans. Use a range of communication skills to address care needs and complex issues with patients, families and staff. Qualifications

Minimum Education : Master’s Degree in Social Work (Required) Minimum Work Experience : 3 years post-MS W experience (Required) Required Skills/Knowledge : Excellent communication skills; ability to relate to diverse patient populations; sensitivity to individuals from varied backgrounds and cultures. Required Licenses and Certifications : Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in DC minimum; must be licensed in MD and/or VA if providing services in those jurisdictions (including telemedicine). Functional Accountability

Ensures Effective Patient/Family Plan is Developed, Implemented and Documented — Facilitate interventions, based on assessment, family and staff requests, and timeframe. Facilitate child protection processes when appropriate. Provide follow-up services and assess outcomes of interventions. Document assessments and interventions in the patient’s medical record. Provide comprehensive psychosocial assessment for identified patients and families; develop intervention plans. Use a range of communication skills to assist patients, families and staff to address care needs and complex issues. Multidisciplinary Communication

Educate staff about psychosocial issues impacting treatment plans. Organize patient care conferences when complex issues arise. Participate in team meetings to address patient care issues. Facilitate discharge planning with Case Management, nursing staff and physicians. Communicate with relevant hospital staff to ensure continuity of care. Advocate for patient and family needs within the hospital system. External Resources

Research appropriate resources to assist families at home. Share information with relevant agencies, respecting patient/family confidentiality. Maintain positive referral relationships with community agencies and professional organizations. Advocate for patient/family needs within the community. Barrier Removal

Intervene in complex situations regarding patient care needs or systems issues. Research solutions within the hospital or community. Mediates conflicts, collaborating with other staff as appropriate. Provide assistance to patients, families and staff while maintaining boundaries and limits. Advanced Clinical Practice and Leadership

Precepts staff on patient care documentation standards; mentors staff on documentation practices. Provides educational programs for unit staff and social work staff on topics such as communication, child abuse, domestic violence, de-escalation, coping, and family dynamics. Serves as a resource for locating community resources. Supports and mentors staff in evidentiary practice and outcome improvements. Participates in MSW student education in the Children’s National field placement program. Participates in policy, procedure and program reviews to reflect professional practice standards. May represent social work on hospital committees as needed. Organizational Accountabilities

Location and Scheduling Details: District of Columbia – Washington; CN Hospital (Main Campus), 111 Michigan Avenue NW, Washington DC 20010.
