Court Name/Organization Illinois Northern Pretrial Services The U.S. Pretrial Services Office for the Northern District of Illinois is currently accepting applications for the full-time position of a Pretrial Services Officer. The Pretrial Services Officer acts as a pretrial release investigator and supervision officer, supporting the U.S. District Court in deliberations and decisions concerning pretrial release of defendants charged with federal offenses, and ensuring public safety through monitoring and supervision of defendants placed under court supervision, including location monitoring. Duties may be assigned in any of the areas described depending on office needs. Responsibilities
Gather and verify background information concerning persons charged with a federal criminal offense when they are arrested or summoned to court. Query and interpret law enforcement automated criminal records systems to obtain and verify information. Evaluate information and prepare a report for the judicial officer prior to the Initial Appearance, with an assessment of risks of non-appearance and danger to the community. Attend court hearings to represent Pretrial Services, provide the court, government, and defense counsel with additional information as needed, and stay current with case status and court orders. Assign and schedule the work of the investigation unit for all pretrial investigative work and coordinate/assign necessary court coverage. Conduct community contacts and be available for weekend arrest duty court coverage as needed. Investigate violations, prepare written reports for the court, and recommend appropriate action to be taken by the court. Supervise a caseload of defendants, including location monitoring (LM) defendants, on a 24/7 basis as currently in place, including community and home contacts. Provide weekend location monitoring coverage and coverage for additional caseloads as needed during periods of leave. Monitor defendant compliance according to procedures in the district LM Policy Manual and report any violations to the judicial officer. Perform other duties as assigned. The above list reflects typical duties and is not exhaustive. A U.S. Pretrial Services Officer must manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, case-driven, and time-sensitive environment. Work in excess of 40 hours per week may be required to meet court demands. Qualifications
Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or provide documentation proving eligibility to work in the United States. A driver’s license and access to a vehicle are required. Education and experience: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with at least one year of specialized experience, or equivalent, plus sufficient keyboarding or equivalent skills to produce reports and use office systems. Specialized Experience:
Progressively responsible experience in probation, pretrial services, parole, corrections, criminal investigations, or related fields. Experience as a police officer or security officer not creditable unless it is relevant to the position. Maximum Age Requirement:
First-time appointees must not have reached their 37th birthday at the time of appointment. Some existing law enforcement experience may affect age calculations under applicable retirement provisions. Physical Requirements:
Good distance vision in at least one eye (with or without corrective lenses) and normal hearing (with or without hearing aids). Severe health problems may disqualify. Background Investigation, Drug Screening & Medical Standards:
Candidates will be asked about their background including criminal history and drug use. A medical examination, drug screening, and a ten-year background investigation are required. Ongoing random drug screening and periodic background investigations may apply.
