Job Summary

The Fiber Splicing Technician splices, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs fiber optic cables. Job Responsibilities

Diagnosing faulty cable plant: identifying, detecting, and resolving issues that have known performance problems. Provide field notes and proposals to resolve issues for clients review and approval. End-of-Line Network Testing: testing light levels at the end of fiber networks to ensure proper signal transmission and network performance. Cable Prep: ensure cables are properly labeled and organized to minimize errors during installation. Build Fiber Cases and Enclosures: construct protective housings for fiber optic equipment and connections. Splice Color for Color Fibers: match fiber colors to ensure correct connections. Cable Management: organize cables within the enclosure to prevent tangling or damage. Sealing and Placement of Case: ensure enclosure is properly closed and secured to protect internal equipment. Read Prints and Maps: examine splice matrix and redline maps to understand fiber routes. Splice off color and multiple cables in one enclosure. Jumping Trays: route fibers between trays to optimize pathways. Splice Tie Point and Jumper Cases: splice fibers at tie points and connect jumper cables. Rehab gel-filled cases: refurbish or rehabilitate gel-filled enclosures. Redlining and Documentation: annotate drawings or documents with changes or updates. Case swaps and audits: replace equipment cases or enclosures. May pull cable through existing duct package, pull cable through conduit (manually, blowing, or mechanically), and splice/activate underground and aerial lines. Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Qualifications

General

Ability to perform physical labor, climb ladders and poles, and work in confined spaces. Ability to read blueprints for cable placement and utilities locations. Must be able to distinguish between different fiber colors. Self-starter with motivation to achieve objectives. Excellent interpersonal communication skills (oral and written) and a team player. Strong problem solving and decision-making skills. Basic math skills for measurements and related tasks. Ability to listen and follow directions. Organized, multi-tasked, and able to maintain a neat and safe work environment. Ability to work at heights on ladders and poles and in confined spaces. Ability to distinguish between different fiber connections.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Outdoor work in all weather conditions. Maintain visual and audible coordination with crew and others for safety. Work around heavy equipment and machinery. Stand or walk for long periods; lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Frequent bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and twisting. Wear safety boots, safety glasses, hard hat, and other applicable safety gear.
