Overview
Coding Specialist II - ProFee Experience Needed - Remote (TX, AR, FL WI Residents only) Parkland Health and Hospital System is a diverse healthcare institution with a mission to improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities. This role codes and verifies charge data to ensure correct coding, abstraction, and billing for ED, SDS, OPC, OBS, specialty clinics, and/or inpatient OB/newborn encounters. The coder may also review charges to ensure accurate professional charging and billing. Requires proficiency in ICD-10 CM, PCS, CPT, HCPCS, HCC, HEDIS CAT II, E/M, and modifier codes, and may provide direction to coding staff to ensure accuracy and reimbursement. Must live in TX, AR, FL or WI Responsibilities Code, abstract, and conduct charge quality review on all episodes of care for ED, SDS, OPC, OBS, inpatient OB/newborn, and specialty clinics according to coding conventions, guidelines, and hospital policy. Assign diagnosis and procedures codes utilizing ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS, HCC and HEDIS CAT II, E/M codes per CMS requirements for professional and hospital billing. May train and review the work of other coders for accuracy and efficiency. Aim to achieve and maintain 95% accuracy on quality reviews and meet productivity standards. Verify, edit, and/or enter charges based on documentation or payer requirements, reporting discrepancies timely. Update patient databases with classification codes and resolve conflicts to provide accurate patient health information per Parkland standards. Stay current with developments in health information management and integrate knowledge into practice. Identify process improvements and contribute to customer satisfaction; make recommendations to supervisors and monitor results. Foster positive working relationships with physicians, nurses, and staff to ensure productive encounters. Maintain knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, and guidelines; develop internal controls to ensure compliance with laws and accreditation requirements. Maintain CE hours and renew coding credentials.
Education
High school diploma required. Must have completed an approved coding program or be a graduate of a Health Information Management program. Strong knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology and strong application skills.
Experience
Two (2) years of coding experience in an acute care setting or diverse clinical specialties. Physician office coding, charging, and billing experience preferred.
Equivalent Education And/or Experience
May have an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in lieu of specific education and/or experience stated above.
Certification/Registration/Licensure
Must be AHIMA-certified as one of: RHIT, RHIA, CCS, or CCS-P; OR AHIMA certifications. Or certified through AAPC as CPC, CPC-H, or COC.
Skills Or Special Abilities
Advanced coding and charge review skills, including modifiers and billing rules (AMA, state and federal). Knowledge of ICD-9/ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT-4/HCPCS, HCC, HEDIS CAT II, E/M, APCs, and local coverage requirements; familiarity with Epic EHR and 3M 360 coding is preferred. Ability to achieve a minimum pre-employment coding test score of 80% (Contract coders with 95% accuracy at Parkland exempt). Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology; proficiency with basic computer software and coding tools.
