Principal Applied Scientist, Amazon Connect

The Principal Applied Scientist will drive the scientific vision for AI systems. The role requires tackling intrinsically hard, previously unsolved problems while balancing rapid innovation with reliability and compliance. You should be comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and driving solutions in ambiguous problem spaces. You'll work closely with senior technical leaders within the team and across AWS.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Drive the scientific vision of teams in the organization and advise technical leadership on scientific challenges
  • Initiate and lead the design and delivery of science solutions that address significantly large or endemic customer and business problems
  • Propose innovative solutions to intrinsically hard, previously unsolved problems
  • Influence the organization towards adopting new approaches, concepts, and paradigms
  • Mentor and develop other scientists, fostering a culture of scientific excellence

About the team: Amazon Connect is a highly disruptive cloud-based contact center that enables businesses to deliver engaging, dynamic, and personal customer service experiences.

Basic Qualifications

Required:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related field
  • 10+ years of relevant, broad research experience after PhD
  • Track record of delivering production AI/ML systems with significant customer impact
  • Deep expertise in one or more areas of AI/ML (e.g., NLP, computer vision, deep learning)
  • Strong publication record in top-tier conferences or journals
  • Experience leading and mentoring teams of scientists and engineers
  • Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Strong communication skills and ability to influence across organizations

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred:

  • Experience with large-scale machine learning systems and cloud computing
  • Track record of driving scientific innovation in industry settings
  • Experience partnering with product and engineering teams to deliver AI solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific concepts to non-technical stakeholders
