Overview
Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, University of Chicago Medicine, as a Vascular Access Phlebotomist in the Nursing Inpatient Phlebotomy department. You will be responsible for drawing blood and IV placements under minimal supervision. Verify orders, generate specimen collection labels, and confirm patient identity prior to specimen collection. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity based in the greater Chicagoland area.
Essential Job Functions
- Performs venipuncture and skin punctures with expertise and in a customer service-oriented fashion, adhering to all established policies and procedures
- Properly packages specimens for delivery through the pneumatic tube system
- Stocks blood drawing carts and keeps cart and area clean, safe, and sterile
- Uses handheld system to identify patients, indicate specimen collection status and generate specimen collection labels
- Plans the delivery of IV access for patients in coordination with the healthcare team
- Performs other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current CPR training recognized by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and perform a variety of patient assistance tasks without direct supervision
- Ability to interact effectively with patients, clinical staff, and the general public
- Phlebotomy qualification would include one of the following: C.N.A. with phlebotomy certification; M.A. with phlebotomy certification; EMT-B; EMT-P
Preferred Qualifications
- IV insertion and IV certification
- IV access with ultrasound training
- Training in phlebotomy from an accredited program
- One-two years of practical experience with references
- Thorough knowledge of asepsis; manual dexterity and accuracy
- Ability to follow directions and established procedures with attention to detail
- Ability to utilize institutional computer systems
- Ability to interact effectively with patients, colleagues, and other healthcare workers
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Position Details
- Job Type/FTE: Part-Time (0.5 FTE)
- Shift: Evening Shift (3:00 pm - 11:30 pm), Monday - Friday, every other weekend/holiday, extensive training on day shift
- Work Location: Hyde Park Campus

In this role, we anticipate working approximately 20 hours per week, primarily on the Evening Shift, from 3:00 pm - 11:30 pm, and not on-call. The position is 100% on-site at the Hyde Park campus with weekend shifts every other week as scheduled.

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position. The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed annually. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
