GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Within the Department of Transportation (DOT), to be responsible for a variety of skilled graphic design and production tasks related to the design, layout, application, and fabrication of reflective highway signs for use on state roadways, vehicle graphics and conspicuity markings for use on state vehicles, and other related sign and graphics products; and to do related work as required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works alongside and under the general supervision of a divisional superior/project manager who leads projects, assigns and reviews work, and provides general instruction with considerable latitude for the exercises of individual initiative. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May direct and provide instruction to others assigned to assist. Responsibilities: To operate and maintain computer-aided graphic design software, large format printing systems, vinyl plotters, roll laminators, and other equipment for large scale sign and graphics production. To perform skilled design, layout, and pre-production graphic design tasks including; typesetting, adjusting color, arranging symbols and graphics, and creating/exporting production ready digital files for use in large format printers and vinyl plotters. Creating mockup diagrams and detailed layouts of signs and graphic products. Use of vector graphic design programs like CorelDraw and Adobe Illustrator. To perform skilled fabrication and production tasks including applying pressure-sensitive adhesive-backed sheeting to aluminum substrates; applying clear laminate to printed substrates; weeding, masking, and applying vinyl graphics; cut and score using utility ad craft knives operate and maintain large format latex and solvent ink printers operate and maintain vinyl cutting plotters. To ensure work products conform to standard operating procedures, federal regulations such as the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and state specifications for sign design and guidelines set by the State Traffic Engineer. To interpret and utilize graphic instructions such as blueprints, schematic drawings and layouts. To prepare written documents with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar. To document inventory of materials such as roll goods, prefabricated sign faces, prefabricated signs, sign blanks, first aid kits, and general office supplies. As required, to use common hand tools such as a hammer, saw, screwdriver, portable drills, and other various hand and electric tools. As required, receive training on and operate heavy equipment such as forklifts, personnel lifts, and aluminum break. To coordinate work activities with other departments, other agencies and private contractors. To perform the functions of this classification in a variety of environmental and weather conditions. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES:

A thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques involved in graphic design and typesetting; a working knowledge of the methods, tools, and best practices of sign fabrication; a thorough knowledge of the latest Microsoft Windows operating system; MS Word, Excel and Outlook, Network and Cloud Storage; and Digital File Management; a thorough knowledge of the creation and manipulation of vector files using industry standard software such as CorelDraw or Adobe Illustrator; the ability to fully maintain and operate vinyl plotters, large format printers, and associated software; the ability to reference, interpret, and adhere to RIDOT Sign Standards and the Federal Highway Agency's Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices; a thorough understanding of mathematics, especially those involved in measurements; a working knowledge of traffic control device installation procedures and maintenance. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE : Education: Possession of an Associate's degree or higher with courses in Digital Imaging, Commercial Art or Graphic/Visual Design or a closely related field; and Experience: Considerable employment or experience as a graphic designer, large print shop technician, sign fabricator, or employment in a position involving the application of graphic design and sign production. Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.
