Custodian - Part Time

General Statement of Duties
Performs routine unskilled and semi-skilled manual janitorial, custodial and/or security tasks in support of an organizational unit of the city.
Position is part time and will be expected to work 19 hours per week on average. Distinguishing Features of the Class Employees in this class perform manual labor involving a variety of janitorial and custodial tasks. Work involves the use of light equipment, such as vacuum cleaners, mops, and brooms. Work includes cleaning floors, windows, bathrooms, surfaces, appliances, and furniture. The employees are subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and moving mechanical parts, electrical current, and chemicals. Work is performed under supervision and is evaluated through observation and inspection to determine the thoroughness in carrying out assigned duties.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
Cleans buildings; vacuums, mops, sweeps, dusts, cleans restrooms and restroom fixtures, cleans windows, and woodwork, and shampoos carpets.
Keeps appliances, surfaces, tables, and chairs clean.
Empties trash.
Stocks restrooms with paper products such as towels and tissue; stocks soap.
Operates equipment such as vacuum cleaners, etc.; maintains necessary inventory of cleaning supplies and labels chemicals with SDS labels that are provided.
Secures building after work is completed.
Additional Job Duties
Performs related duties as required and as directed by Supervisor
Runs errands in city vehicle as needed.

Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of the methods and techniques applied in unskilled manual labor and custodial work.
Working knowledge of the standard practices, material, tools, and equipment utilized in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings.
Working knowledge of standard hand tools, operation of light equipment, and materials used in assigned work.
Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work.
Ability to work cooperatively as a team member, works productively without close supervision, and respond courteously to citizens and employees.
Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, manual dexterity, feeling, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pound of force occasionally; 20 pounds of force frequently; and 10 pounds constantly.
Must possess the visual acuity to operate light equipment such as the vacuum cleaner, and steam cleaner, and to review work for cleanliness and thoroughness.
Education and Experience
It is imperative that employee be able to read and write proficiently. Any combination of education and experience that produces the required knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.
Special Requirement
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Starting salary: $15.50/hr
