UI/UX Designer

to support the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of the Chief Information Officer (HUD OCIO). The

UI/UX Designer

will lead the design and validation of digital experiences that support HUD’s AI/ML proofs of concept and pilots. This role will ensure interfaces are intuitive, user-centric, and aligned with project objectives while incorporating AI capabilities to enhance usability and operational efficiency. This is a hybrid remote position based in Washington, D.C. that will require some onsite work at the customer’s location. An estimated 25% annual travel within the U.S. will be required. Responsibilities

Apply HCD principles to elaborate business needs, improve requirements, and optimize problem context. Design and iterate digital interfaces for web and mobile applications to enhance the user experience. Integrate AI capabilities into user interfaces, ensuring usability, security, and ethical safeguards. Conduct user research, usability testing, and validation throughout proof-of-concept and pilot lifecycles. Develop wireframes, prototypes, and design documentation for multiple concurrent teams. Support HUD compliance with Executive Order on Improving our Nation Through Better Design. Collaborate with development, data science, and DevOps teams to implement design solutions. Requirements Required Experience and Skills

5+ years of experience in HCD/UX design, preferably for federal or regulated environments. Experience designing AI/ML-enabled systems or proofs of concept. Track record of managing multiple concurrent design initiatives. Experience conducting user research and testing, including usability studies, user interviews, and iterative validation. Experience with design documentation, including wireframes, prototypes, style guides, and design system artifacts. Experience designing AI-driven interfaces (chatbots, predictive analytics dashboards, natural language interfaces) preferred. Experience with Google Analytics, Hotjar, Mixpanel for measuring usability and engagement preferred. Experience building and maintaining enterprise-level design systems across multiple teams preferred. Skills in creating advanced animations, transitions, and micro-interactions preferred. Expertise in iOS/Android-specific design guidelines preferred. Experience making AI systems transparent, explainable, and user-trustworthy preferred. Previous experience supporting HUD OCIO preferred. Ability to pass required Federal background screening and obtain and maintain both government clearance and customer approval. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future. Technical Skills

Proficiency with design and prototyping tools (Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, Axure) Knowledge of UI/UX principles, accessibility standards (Section 508, WCAG standards), and design systems Familiarity with AI/ML interfaces and human-AI interaction principles Basic understanding of front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, React) to collaborate with developers Experience with usability testing and analytics tools Core Competencies

Bachelor’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Interaction Design, Graphic Design, or equivalent field - Computer Science, Information Science, Cognitive Science (required) Master’s degree in HCI, UX, or related field - Computer Science, Information Science, Cognitive Science or Interactive Design (preferred) UX/HCD certifications (NN/g UX Certification, UXQB, or similar) preferred Physical Requirements

Candidates must reside within daily commuting distance of Washington, D.C. Must be willing and able to travel an estimated 25% of time within the U.S. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. May need to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
