DEPUTY COUNTY ATTORNEY I Department: COUNTY ATTORNEY’S OFFICE Summary
Under direct supervision, prosecutes criminal cases, represents the county in civil matters, provides legal advice to county officials, conducts legal research and drafts legal documents. Duties are performed under the supervision of experienced attorneys and include assessing evidence, interviewing witnesses, preparing for trials, appearing in court for hearings and trials and ensuring compliance with legal requirements. Essential Functions
Performs legal work for a caseload of criminal or civil matters. Evaluates law enforcement investigation reports to determine whether to pursue prosecution and collaborates with supervisory staff as needed to determine direction. Drafts and reviews criminal complaints. May prosecute felony and misdemeanor crimes from initial charging to sentencing of defendants found guilty. May work cases involving assaults, kidnapping, drugs, sexual offenses, burglaries, thefts and/or robberies; formulates and offers pleas when appropriate; represents the Attorney’s Office at preliminary hearings as needed. Conducts officer, witness and victim interviews. Prepares for and represents the Attorney’s Office at trials; handles subpoena of witnesses and preparation of exhibits. Covers hearings for other Deputy County Attorneys as needed or assigned. May prepare informational reports pertaining to caseload (office statistical data, grant reporting, etc.). Complies with victim notification laws by telephone, letter and personal contact. Reviews and stays up to date on changes and updates to the law. Ensures that all matters related to discovery are handled in a timely manner. Makes certain that cases that are closed are handled in accordance with office procedures. Performs related duties as assigned. Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
Juris Doctorate from an accredited educational institution in the United States. Knowledge of
Core legal principles and the application of criminal and civil law. Judicial procedures and the rules of evidence. Legal research techniques, including the use of electronic databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, to prepare cases and stay current with case law. Constitutional law, particularly as it relates to a defendant’s rights and due process requirements. How county government is structured and operates. Skill in
Analyzing and problem solving to assess complex legal issues and apply legal principles to specific cases. Writing clearly and effectively in legal documents and presenting logical arguments persuasively in court. Upholding a strong commitment to professional ethics, integrity and impartial judgment. Handling a large volume of work and managing a diverse caseload efficiently and effectively. Maintaining effective and cooperative working relationships with co-workers, law enforcement, judicial personnel and the public. License and Certification Requirements
Must possess a valid state driver’s license and an active license to practice law in the state of Arizona. Physical Demands and Working Environment
