Summary:
The Food Service Purchasing & Inventory Control Coordinator plays a key role in supporting the daily operations of the hospital’s Nutrition and Food Services department. This position is responsible for purchasing, receiving, and managing food and supply inventory to ensure high-quality patient meals and efficient department operations. The ideal candidate has strong computer skills, attention to detail, and is comfortable working in a fast-paced healthcare environment. This role requires regular lifting of items up to 50 lbs. and strict adherence to food safety standards.
Responsibilities:
Order all food, beverages, and dietary supplies according to menus, patient census, and department par levels
Maintain optimal inventory levels through accurate tracking and forecasting
Use computerized inventory and purchasing systems to manage orders, data entry, and reporting (e.g., TMC, FMS, Excel)
Receive deliveries, inspect for quality and accuracy, and organize items in appropriate storage (dry, refrigerated, or frozen)
Ensure all products are labeled, dated, and rotated using FIFO (First-In, First-Out) method
Communicate with vendors to coordinate orders, resolve issues, and track back orders
Assist in month-end inventory counts and prepare inventory usage reports
Ensure cleanliness, organization, and safety of storage areas in compliance with hospital and regulatory standards (e.g., Joint Commission, HACCP)
Collaborate with food & nutrition services team, kitchen team, and clinical nutrition team to meet service needs
Lift and move food boxes, containers, and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.
Comfortable with work environments of:
a. Hospital kitchen, storerooms, loading docks, and office settings
b. Exposure to commercial refrigeration and freezer units
c. Frequent standing, walking, and lifting
Other information:
Education
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Coursework in nutrition, food service, or supply chain preferred.
Licensure/Certification
• None.
Experience
• 1–2 years of purchasing or inventory experience in a hospital, healthcare, or food service setting.
