REQUIRED . The Toponymist will analyze feature data within the Geographic Names Database (GNDB) and work closely with geographic names experts to ensure accurate and reliable geographical information. You will respond to inquiries regarding the correct usage of names and various Romanization systems, while leveraging geospatial tools and agency guidelines. Key Responsibilities: Analyze and refine information associated with geographic names, collaborating with experts to ensure accuracy. Consult agency guidelines to address questions on the application of names and descriptive information. Maintain and update the GNDB by accurately entering relevant data. Research and geo-reference hydrographic and topographic sources to enhance geographic accuracy. Apply policies governing name treatment and collaborate with organizations like BGN and DoS. Utilize ArcGIS Pro and QGIS to conduct research and create geo-databases and compliant shapefiles. Identify and recommend native maps or data for acquisition to enrich source material. Provide necessary foreign translation to support office missions. Ensure that policies regarding International Trade in Arms Regulations (ITAR) exemptions are upheld. REQUIRED . Minimum of 10 years of experience in relevant fields. ILR Skill Level certification for reading Mandarin (minimum level 2+). Intermediate proficiency in GIS software including ArcGIS Pro and QGIS. Advanced understanding of Geographic Names collection methodologies. Ability to function effectively both as a team member and independent analyst in a fast-paced environment. Strong research and information-gathering skills. Experience with various GEOINT sources and mapping imagery. Proficient at creating shapefiles and managing geo-databases. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
