Job Description: Associate Consultant, Health
The Opportunity: The Associate Consultant plays a pivotal role in delivering strategic health insurance consulting services to external clients. Operating under the direction and guidance of senior consultants and client team leaders, this mid-level position is designed for professionals with a solid foundation in health insurance and a desire to deepen their expertise in health benefit plan design, cost analysis, and benefits strategy.
The Associate Consultant is focused on mastering core health insurance concepts and developing advanced capabilities in complex, client-specific health benefit analyses. This role is highly visible and involves frequent client interaction, requiring strong analytical skills, professional writing skills, attention to detail, project management skills, and a consultative approach.
Working both independently and collaboratively, the Associate Consultant contributes to a wide range of group health benefits projects. They may lead components of engagements and supervise junior staff, demonstrating initiative, accountability, and a commitment to meeting project deadlines. Additionally, the Associate Consultant actively mentors junior team members and fosters a workplace culture that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
The Role:
Client team and project experiences involve extensive client-facing opportunities and are intentionally structured to provide broad exposure to the design, development, and implementation of employee health benefit strategies. The Associate Consultant will work across diverse projects, contributing technical expertise and strategic insight to help clients optimize their health insurance programs. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Analyze complex health plan data and conduct actuarial/underwriting evaluations, including budget projections, claims experience reviews, financial performance assessments, insurance renewal analyses, and evaluations of health delivery systems and related benefit issues. Prepare client-ready reports, presentations, and memoranda that clearly communicate analytical findings and strategic recommendations. Serve as a technical and/or secondary consultant for select clients, offering subject matter expertise to internal teams and external stakeholders. Manage project delivery, including planning, budgeting, quality assurance, and timely execution of client deliverables. Contribute to practice development initiatives, including process improvements and quality enhancement efforts. Support business development activities aimed at revenue growth, including identifying opportunities and contributing to proposal development. Qualifications:
Key Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., mathematics, actuarial, or related field). At least 4 years of relevant experience in a consulting firm or health insurance company, with a focus on employee health benefits. Industry Expertise:
Strong understanding of employee health insurance benefits, including plan design and funding arrangements. Familiarity with health insurance industry terminology. Ability to interpret and analyze health benefit plan descriptions. Experience interacting with health insurance carrier representatives. Direct involvement in the analysis, design, and implementation of a broad range of health insurance benefit programs. Experience working in client-facing roles and contributing to project delivery. Technical & Analytical Skills:
Proven ability to analyze complex health plan data, including financial performance, claims experience, and renewal projections. Demonstrated critical thinking, problem-solving, and quantitative analysis skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, including Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Strong professional writing skills, with the ability to produce client-ready reports and presentations.
