REPORTS TO:
Building Administrator and/or Director of Facilities and Operations or Designee
PURPOSE
Responsible for the coordination of the custodial activities and the cleaning and maintenance of the school building(s) and grounds assigned. Also responsible for training of custodial staff, ordering supplies and performing routine cleaning and related work as required. Primary responsibility is to provide students and staff with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to work, learn, play and develop. Maintain the school building(s) in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of it may be made at all times.
This is the senior level class within the Custodian series. Positions at this level are distinguished from Custodian by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of work assigned. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to the classes within the series, including the exercise of considerable independent thinking, judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive supervision from Administrator and may receive guidance and direction from the Director of Facilities and Operations or Lead Custodian. Head Custodian exercises functional and technical supervision over custodial staff.
QUALIFICATIONS

A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent Possess a thorough working knowledge of custodial work, including the use of cleaning methods and materials and the use of equipment Minimum of five years' experience in work relating to the care and maintenance of buildings and grounds Knowledge of methods, materials, equipment and tools used in building and grounds maintenance work Basic knowledge of electrical, carpentry, drywall, painting and plumbing repair Knowledge of basic heating, cooling and ventilating equipment Knowledge of the principles of employee training and supervision Ability to work with minimal supervision in performance of duties Able to lift 50 lbs Willingness to attend workshops and training sessions on cleaning materials and methods Ability to understand and follow verbal and written communication Ability to work harmoniously and communicate with students, parents and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform skilled maintenance, repairs and construction work in trades such as plumbing, heating, mechanics, painting, electronic, metal work, rough carpentry, plastering, roofing, and irrigation Train and participate in the training of custodial staff Demonstrate good interpersonal skills Assist in establishing and maintaining an orderly and supportive work environment Input maintenance work requests in the current monitoring system Perform cleaning and custodial maintenance Operate tools, equipment and machinery used in custodial work with skill and efficiency Assist building Administrator and Director of Facilities and Operations in the selection of custodial employees Coordinates with the building Administrator and Director of Facilities and Operations to develop a work schedule and assignments for the custodial staff Have working knowledge of the Custodial Handbook and teach other custodial staff Assist in the development and updating of the Custodial Handbook and establishing standards for custodial cleaning and maintenance work Inspects custodians' work and takes necessary action to achieve improvements in cases where custodial work is not satisfactory Assist the building Administrator in evaluation of custodial staff Responsible for reviewing custodial staff time sheets, injury reports, safety inspections and other similar reports May be called upon for evening, weekend and holiday emergencies relating to security, custodial and/or maintenance of the building Supervise and participate in necessary set-ups for Facilities Use needs and special school events and assists in scheduling a custodian to work the event Participate in job district related meetings when requested Assist fire and other utility employees in conducting inspections Make adjustments in schedules and work assignments to cover for unforeseen situations and assists in procuring a substitute custodian to cover absent staff shift Responsible for complying with regulations and procedures for the storage and disposal of all waste, recycling and chemicals Knowledge and ability to locate, read and train others on the MSD sheets within buildings Provide and/or assists in arranging training workshops for staff to increase knowledge or as a refresher on certain equipment Maintain professional competence through reading and participation in workshops This job description is not intended to be and should not be construed as an inclusive list of all of the responsibilities, skills or working conditions associated with the position.
