Job Description

The Pharmacy Intern is a pharmacy student who performs the medication distribution tasks of a pharmacy technician under the supervision of a Pharmacist.

Responsibilities

Knowledgeable of generic and trade names of medication. Knows dosage forms and drug strengths. Stocks medication and accurately selects medication for distribution and dispensing.

Utilizes drug distribution systems. Utilizes reports to accurately restock automated dispensing cabinets. Accurately prepares medication for dispensing. Troubleshoots interruptions to service.

Compounds pharmaceuticals, parenteral, and parenteral nutrition solutions. Uses aseptic technique. Uses a laminar air flow hood, compounding aseptic isolator, or clean room as assigned. Follows USP standards.

Packages bulk items in unit dose packages and keeps appropriate records.

Fills medication floorstock requisitions.

Replenishes CPR carts, EMS boxes, OR trays, and other portable storage containers for pharmacy customers.

Inspects and maintains drug storage locations. Knowledgeable of drug storage requirements. Appropriately responds to temperature alarms.

Reports medication errors and controlled substance losses. Files complete reports, analyzes causes, evaluates alternative strategies for avoidance, and makes recommendations for improvement.

Knowledgeable of drug and supply procurement and stocking procedures. Orders medication from primary wholesaler. Receives orders verify bar codes and stock pharmacy. Stocks controlled substances using the electronic narcotic inventory and dispensing system.

Uses pharmacy related computer applications to support the medication order management and distribution processes.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required : High school graduate or equivalent. Enrolled in an accredited school of Pharmacy.

Required Experience : Sufficient math skills to readily learn metric system, metric conversion, and ratio and proportion calculations. Sufficient verbal skills to readily learn medical terminology.

Required Certification & Licensures: Registered as a Pharmacy Intern with the Virginia State Board of Pharmacy OR Registered as a Pharmacist with the Virginia State Board of Pharmacy within 120 days of hire
