Overview

Idaho Transportation Department is hiring a Mechanic to join the District 3 team in Garden City, Idaho. The incumbent will be responsible for repairing and maintaining heavy-duty road maintenance and construction equipment and light-duty vehicles in accordance with federal and state motor vehicle regulations. The ideal candidate will be an experienced mechanic with knowledge of diagnostic, maintenance, and repair techniques for a wide variety of vehicles and equipment. ITD offers potential career advancement through a training plan to become Equipment Technician, Transportation classification within about 2 years.

Note: This position requires that you obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 60 days of hire, as well as pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair a variety of equipment and vehicles used within the District, including repair and maintenance of power plants, power-trains, and related systems for highway maintenance equipment (e.g., motor graders, sweepers, excavators, dozers, frontend loaders, equipment trailers, sanders, and a range of trucks).
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain electrical and electronic systems, including computer control components and other related electronic systems in vehicles, primarily 10-wheel and 6-wheel trucks.
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain heating and air conditioning systems in vehicles and equipment.
  • Fabricate and weld various equipment parts and components, including snow plow harnesses and sander parts, and other specialized parts not readily available for purchase.
  • Mount and balance tires and perform minor repairs as part of routine maintenance.
  • Repair steering and suspension systems on district vehicles, focusing on heavy-duty trucks.
  • Maintain records of repairs, parts orders, and related information using word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Diagnose, repair, and fabricate various hydraulic systems used on district equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Good knowledge of safety precautions and procedures relating to mechanical equipment and repair shops.
  • Knowledge of the use, care, and disposal of hazardous automotive materials and waste.

Experience

  • Diagnosing and repairing gasoline and/or diesel automotive and construction-type equipment.
  • Using mechanics' tools and related specialized equipment to perform maintenance, repair, and overhaul of engines and related drive train, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Preparing records and reports.
  • Diagnosing and repairing electronic and computer-controlled motor vehicle systems.
  • Reading and interpreting technical service manuals.

Valid driver's license required.

Licenses and Requirements
