RESPONSIBLITIES:

The school Social Worker will provide assistance with home, school, or personal adjustment problems of children.

DUTIES:
  • Provide counseling and support for children whose difficulties in school stem from problems in the home or community.
  • Provide outreach and casework services to parents of children who are having difficulty in school.
  • Consult and advise other school personnel on cases in order to modify a pupil's behavior or to provide a liaison between the school and the home.
  • Establish a liaison with local and county agencies in order to provide a continuum of services on a referral and consultative basis.
  • Provide feedback to school personnel regarding active cases, which had been referred for assistance.
  • Assist in the social adjustment of pupils who are new to the community or returning from institutions.
  • Provide consultative and outreach services to preschool and primary school programs as an early detection and preventative measure.
  • Be responsible for other social work activities, which may be deemed appropriate by the building principal, and/or Director of Special Education.
  • Counseling students with personal and psychological issues that affect their performance, behavior, and socialization in school.
  • Providing counseling sessions, treatment plans, or workshops as necessary and establishing prevention programs and intervention plans.
  • Communicating with students to determine the areas in which they may need assistance or counseling.
  • Assisting teachers and administrators with behavioral and attitude issues by communicating with students to find the causes of their distress.
  • Providing information, when appropriate, to outside support services to help students with economic, emotional, or physical issues.
  • Assisting at-risk students or students with disabilities.
  • Communicating with parents, teachers, and administrators to understand students' challenges.
  • Maintaining case files and reports to track students' progress and problems.
  • Helping students and families suffering from abuse, violence, hunger, or homelessness to access resources like shelters, food banks, and medical care.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Certification as a New York State School Social Worker
  • S. in Social Work
  • Prior experience in a school setting
  • Background in children and family services


SALARY:

Appropriate placement on teachers' salary schedule

PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten (10) Months

Reports to: Building Principal; Responsible to the Special Education Supervisor, and the Director of Special Education. (updated 4/2023)
