Director of Machine Learning Location: Remote (US-based preferred) The Role We’re hiring a Director of Machine Learning to lead all ML initiatives at a high-growth fintech startup. You’ll own the machine learning strategy and execution—building the team from scratch, setting the roadmap, and delivering models that drive real business outcomes in areas like risk modeling, fraud detection, credit decisioning, and forecasting. This role is ideal for a technically hands-on leader who thrives in early-stage environments and has a proven track record of building ML systems that scale in production. What You’ll Do Define and lead the company’s machine learning strategy across risk, fraud, pricing, personalization, and more Hire, grow, and lead a team of ML engineers, data scientists, and MLOps professionals Architect scalable ML systems and pipelines that drive financial decision-making in real time Collaborate with product, engineering, and data teams to ensure seamless integration of ML into core systems Establish the ML experimentation framework, tooling, and best practices as the team grows Stay ahead of research in ML, LLMs, and generative models—evaluating and applying them in a regulated financial context What We’re Looking For 8+ years of experience in machine learning or applied data science, with at least 3+ years in a leadership role Fintech or financial services experience strongly preferred—especially in risk, fraud, lending, or portfolio optimization Experience building and scaling technical teams from the ground up Proven ability to ship and maintain ML systems in production Proficiency in Python, SQL, and ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, XGBoost, LightGBM) Familiarity with regulatory constraints in financial data, model governance, and explainability Startup experience—comfortable working in a fast-moving, high-ownership environment Seniority level
