JOB SUMMARY Performs two dimensional (2-D) ultrasonic recordings of internal organs for the diagnosis of disease and study of the malfunction of organs. SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations.Perform invasive ultrasound procedures, doppler vascular examinations, deep abdominal studies and color-flow ultrasound as requiredSelects appropriate equipment for use in ultrasound setup, following exam specifications.Explains the test to the patient. Instructs and assists the patient in assuming the physical position for examination.Uses two patient identifiers before performing any procedure.Able to assess patient pain interfering with imaging procedure; makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.Selects a transducer and adjusts the equipment controls according to the organ to be examined, the depth of field and other specifications of test.Enters test data and patient information into computer of ultrasound equip0ment to maintain record of test results.Moves transducer by hand over specified area of the body and observes sound wave display screen to monitor quality of ultrasonic pattern produced.Produces images of internal organs and records diagnostic data on magnetic tape, computer disk, strip printout or film.Obtains permanent record of internal examination by photographing images of organs shown on the display module or removing the strip printout.Evaluates technical quality of films to obtain representative images of pathogenic conditions, processes film in accordance with standard procedures or techniques.Discusses test results with supervisor or attending physician.Performs all quality control checks as prescribed.Maintains records of ultrasound films taken, archiving and de-archiving data as required; calculates, compiles and records data from numerical readings on patient's medical record and related documents.Understands and practices proper use of all equipment; never operates equipment inconsistent with manufacturer's instruction.Calibrates, cleans and performs routine maintenance on equipment to ensure proper functioning; cleans and sterilizes instruments, supplies and equipment, stocks and replenishes supplies as needed.Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric and general population.BASIC SKILLS Basic computer skillsEDUCATION AND REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS Successful completion of an approved one (1) year program in Ultrasound Technology.Must be eligible for registry or registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).Must be eligible for registry or registered by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI.One (1) year of imaging experience.Certification in area of specialty.Current BLS certificationCurrent compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty(ies) as appropriate.
