The Sonographer must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. The individual must possess the ability to assess data reflective of each patient's status. They must interpret necessary information to identify patient needs and provide appropriate care. The Sonographer is responsible for performing sonographic examinations of all body parts for diagnostic interpretation. Professional judgment is essential in the performance of procedures while applying principles of radiation protection. Duties include maintaining patient records and files, assuming responsibility for departmental quality assurance, and pursuing continuing education. The Sonographer must assist in transferring patients to and from imaging. In the absence of a supervisor, the Sonographer can assume departmental responsibility as required. Must rotate shifts as needed and perform ancillary duties as requested by the supervisor. The individual should maintain general hygiene in the department and themselves. They must work well in stressful situations and be willing to learn other imaging modalities as needed. Performance in two fields of ultrasound (General and Vascular or Cardiac) is required. The Sonographer must perform all requested exams for diagnostic interpretation by a radiologist. Continuing education to fulfill radiology and/or RDMS requirements is expected. The individual is responsible for the care of transducers and the neatness of the work area. They must handle the paperwork that accompanies procedures and assist with ultrasound invasive procedures. Participation in the preparation of policies and procedures is required. Consultation with referring physicians is essential. The Sonographer must assist with efforts to obtain accreditations and actively pursue education in a changing field. Attendance at meetings, in-services, and disaster drills is necessary. Qualifications include the ability to perform all diagnostic exams related to the assigned modality. Knowledge and skills will determine the level of certification, from Tech I to Tech IV, based on ARDMS categories. Travel may be required to provide services to various sites.
