Overview

Principal Mechanical Engineer, Consumer Hardware (Starlink) Bastrop, TX.

SpaceX was founded to enable humanity to explore the stars. SpaceX is actively developing technologies to make this possible, with the goal of enabling human life on Mars. We design, build, test, and operate all parts of the Starlink system to deliver fast, reliable internet worldwide. We are looking for best-in-class engineers to maximize Starlinks utility for communities and businesses around the globe.

Starlink mechanical engineers in Bastrop are focused on high-volume consumer products shipped worldwide. Our hardware is technically sophisticated and user friendly, serving customers from remote Amazon classrooms to researchers in Antarctica, digital nomads, emergency responders, commercial airlines, cruise lines, and rural or developing areas. As a member of this team, you will lead creative, multi-disciplinary projects that include designing both the consumer products themselves and the factories that manufacture them.

  • Develop design criteria, collaborate on requirements, and drive system-level optimizations
  • Execute key technology and material developments to impact product performance, cost, and user experience
  • Perform field reliability testing and iterate on hardware to achieve high in-field performance in harsh environments
  • Design and develop state-of-the-art production lines that manufacture the product, including assembly, joining, test cells, process development, control systems design, automation programming, and more
  • Refine production systems to achieve high-rate, high-yield, and high-uptime processes
  • Establish an efficient product lifecycle from supply chain through final integration, balancing cost, complexity, and quality; collaborate with partner teams to realize an efficient in-house production line
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline
  • Experience with CAD and FEA software packages
  • 8+ years of professional experience with mechanical/electromechanical design, analysis, testing, and/or manufacturing
  • Professional experience on the full lifecycle design of a consumer-facing product
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Industry leadership in innovative consumer product design
  • Masters degree in engineering or a related technical discipline
  • Experience taking multiple consumer-facing products through their full lifecycle (design to market)
  • 5+ years of professional experience in mechanical design and analysis
  • 2+ years of hands-on project experience with complex mechanical systems, preferably as a team lead
  • Proficient in 3D CAD (NX preferred)
  • Strong understanding of GD&T, mechanical fundamentals, structural analysis, and failure modes of complex systems
  • Ownership of a complex component or assembly from design through high-volume production ramp
  • Expertise in manufacturing processes and designing for high-volume manufacturability and assembly
  • Exposure to a variety of production machinery and equipment (motion systems, sensors, temperature controllers, etc.)
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills
  • Data-driven decision making
