Overview
Phlebotomist role at MyMichigan Health. The phlebotomist is responsible for the collection of quality biological specimens for laboratory testing, distribution of specimens to proper departments, and proper preparation and handling of specimens for laboratory analysis.
Responsibilities
- Provides superior customer service by maintaining positive relations with patients during invasive procedures. Responds to the needs of customers of all ages and helps to resolve exceptions. Maintains professional communication with patients, physicians, nurses, and hospital departments and outreach customers. Educates patients and other laboratory clients in proper test protocol.
- Interprets physician orders to collect high quality specimens accurately.
- Performs invasive procedures including venipuncture, micro-capillary collections, central line draws (where applicable) and other test procedures on patients of all age groups by following exact protocols and procedures, including patient preparation prior to testing and administration of various glucose dosages.
- Handles specimens by selecting the appropriate specimen type to ensure high quality, reliable test results. Distributes specimens in a timely manner to reduce turnaround times and expenses. Prepares esoteric specimens for shipment to reference laboratories and maintains specimen integrity.
- Follows patient registration procedures where required and adheres to strict specimen identification policies. Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control practices and policies.
- Uses the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS) for scheduling, order interpretation, billing retrieval, patient registration support, and confidential reporting of test results. Adheres to all laboratory policies and maintains patient confidentiality.
- Complies with Federal CLIA, CAP, and OSHA regulations. Applies knowledge to care for patients ranging from birth to 100+ years old.
- Access to medication room or pneumatic tube station where applicable, and performs other duties as assigned.

- Communication, customer service, and organizational skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and laboratory information systems
- Knowledge of specimen integrity, laboratory terminology, and current policies/procedures
- Physical/Working Conditions
- Ability to wear PPE and work in environments with potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens
- Ability to move about the facility, sit/stand/walk for extended periods, and perform postural changes as needed
- Vision and hearing requirements with or without aids; ability to lift up to 20 lbs occasionally and perform routine dexterity tasks
