Work Details

Work Shift: M-F 10:30pm - 7:00am, Sat. 9:00pm - 5:30am (2 Saturdays a month)

Work Type: On-Site

Location: On-Site role based out of one laboratory located in Chantilly, VA

Target Pay: $21.17 per hour. Pay decisions are determined using factors such as relevant job-related skills, experience, education, training and budget.

Job Purpose / Overview

Specimen Processors are responsible for receiving, preparing, and processing most samples that come into the department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receives and prepares samples for laboratory analyses.
  • Accurately process standard requisitions per approved procedures at expected rates.
  • Removes specimens from transport bags, enters patient data, labels samples and aliquots as needed for multiple testing.
  • Keep inventory of samples after testing by scanning into storage racks; search the lab for any samples not scanned into storage racks.
  • Sort samples for distribution throughout the lab (Coggins, cytology, etc.).
  • Scan tubes into storage racks and enter specimen data into the database to verify accuracy.
  • Accession various sample types for processing.
  • Check all trash containers within the Specimen Processing department when assigned.
  • Assist other lab personnel with specimen storage.
  • Ensure Turn Around Times (TATs) are met.
  • Follow applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including safety and quality procedures. Maintain a clean and organized work area. Restock supplies as needed.
  • Consult with senior peers on non-complex specimen processing tasks to learn through experience.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent, with science-related classes
  • 0-1 year of related work experience is preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Attention to detail and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Reasoning and analytical skills to resolve issues
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in English to participate in team meetings, accurately enter data into company systems, and understand written directions
  • Positive, can-do attitude
  • Data entry skills
  • Personal computer skills, including strong typing and proficient use of Microsoft Office

Working Conditions

  • Stationary position for up to 2 hours; requires use of computer and lab equipment
  • Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch
  • Ability to lift, move, and carry up to 50 lbs
  • Extended hours may be needed
  • Laboratory environments with potential biohazards, mitigated by PPE
  • Work under close to moderate supervision
  • Potential exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease and hazardous chemicals as defined by National Hazard Communication Standards
