Position Summary

The SQL Database Engineer is responsible for ensuring the performance, availability, and security of our SQL Server databases. They will work closely with applications owners and development teams to design, develop, implement, and maintain database solutions that meet business requirements. The SQL Database Engineer will also be involved in troubleshooting database-related issues and providing support to users as needed. They will perform database administration tasks associated with various enterprise-wide systems, as well as some enterprise application responsibilities. This role requires a deep understanding of database administration principles, information security, and proficiency in relevant technologies. Serve as an internal consultant and resource to others in the department. Job Duties and Responsibilities

Design, implement, and maintain high-performance database systems to support our applications and business operations. Optimize database performance through capacity planning, query optimization, index tuning, and other performance-tuning techniques. Perform database engineering and administration tasks, including installation, configuration, tuning, monitoring, backup, recovery, and troubleshooting. Develop and implement data management policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure data integrity, availability, and security Implement and maintain database security measures, including access controls, encryption, and auditing. Collaborate with software developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to design and deploy database solutions that meet business requirements. Lead database-related projects, including upgrades, migrations, and deployments, from planning through execution. Design and implement backup and recovery strategies to ensure the integrity and availability of data. Perform regular backups and test restore procedures to ensure recoverability. Design and manage database security by configuring user access, roles, permissions, and auditing. Implement security best practices to protect sensitive data. Design, configure, and maintain high availability solutions such as AlwaysOn Availability Groups. Develop and test disaster recovery plans to minimize downtime in the event of failure. Apply patches and updates to SQL Server instances and related components in a timely manner. Perform regression testing to ensure compatibility with existing applications. Design, develop, and maintain proactive monitoring and alerting solutions to detect and respond to database issues in real-time. Develop automated scripts and jobs to streamline monitoring tasks. Provide cloud related expertise and administration of PaaS based database platforms, including but not limited to Azure SQL, Azure Data Factory, and more. Lead, take ownership, and work on projects related to the firms Document Management System (DMS) including upgrades, conversions, integrations and migrations. Document Management System (DMS) tasks related to managing data transfers, document imports/exports, user access, advanced troubleshooting of issues, and escalating with vendors to resolve system related issues. Advanced support of DMS related systems including Knowledge Management systems, full text indexing/searching functions, Records Management systems, ethical wall systems. This includes working with other business and technical teams for implementation and support of these systems. Develop documentation of database configurations, procedures, and best practices. Provide training and support for application owners and developers as needed. Stay current with emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in database administration and recommend innovative solutions to enhance our database infrastructure. Maintain skill level and knowledge through formal and informal means. May volunteer or be selected to serve on special committees, work groups, project teams, or escalation teams related to various firm wide IT initiatives. Initiatives may be specific one-time events (e.g., research, testing, rollouts, upgrades, installations) or ongoing activities. All other duties as assigned. Requirements

Education

: Bachelors Degree strongly preferred or comparable training and experience in IT discipline. Microsoft Certifications (MCSE and/or MCDBA) a plus. Experience

: Required: 5+ years of experience in database administration, with a focus on enterprise-level database systems (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL). Strong proficiency in database design, implementation, optimization, and troubleshooting. Extensive experience with database performance tuning, query optimization, and capacity planning. In-depth knowledge of database security principles and best practices. Hands-on experience with database backup and recovery procedures. Database Always on Availability Groups, Multi-Tier, High-Availability application architecture, SAN environment, Virtual SQL Server environments, PowerBI, PowerShell, productivity tools (e.g., Office, Project, Visio). Familiarity with Document Management Systems a plus. Skills

: Works remotely. Occasionally called upon to work hours in excess of your normal daily schedule. Potential for in-office work requests as needed, so proximity to the office is important. Pay Range

: This represents the presently-anticipated low and high end of Reed Smiths pay range for this position. Actual pay may vary based on various factors, including but not limited to location and experience.
