The referenced pay range represents the first and last step pay rates for this job, as set forth in the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Individual pay will be set in accordance with terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides clerical, receptionist and customer service on patient care units while maintaining confidentiality.
  • SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED: None. May orient new Patient Unit Secretaries.
  • MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED: Telephone, intercom, pneumatic tube system, copier, addressograph machine, computer terminal, shredder and fax machine.
  • TYPICAL DUTIES: Transcription of patient care orders, scheduling tests and procedures, completing and processing requisitions, obtaining patient care equipment and/or supplies, participating in patient admissions, discharges and transfers, and maintaining patient care forms.
  • Greets and receives visitors and staff in a professional manner, giving appropriate directions and guidance.
  • Provides courteous and accurate telephone coverage, takes and delivers messages, and triages problems to appropriate person or department.
  • Maintains record of patient location when off unit, communicates and works effectively with other departments, and follows directions of nurses, physicians and other authorized personnel during emergencies.
  • Orders supplies/forms, assures their arrival and restocks appropriately, maintains clean and orderly work environment, and provides assistance on other units as necessary.
  • Assists with patient transport as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS: High school education and 1 year of clerical experience, with demonstrated legible writing and verbal communication skills; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of medical terminology and basic computer skills preferred.
