SUMMARY

SUNY Brockport invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in the Department of African and African American Studies to begin August 1, 2026. Position has responsibility for teaching, scholarly activity, and service to the department, campus, and profession.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Teaching (50%)

  • Engage in experiential and hands-on education
  • Infuse diversity issues as appropriate
  • Manage student advisement and intra-campus recruitment

Scholarly Activity (40%)

  • Publish books or peer reviewed articles in peer-reviewed national or international journals
  • Conduct professional presentations at regional and national conferences
  • Engage in other scholarly activities according to one's academic specialty

Service (10%)

  • Engage in enrollment and retention initiatives
  • Attend University events
  • Provide service to the department, University, community, and profession

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in History or Africana Studies with a specialization in African History
  • Demonstrate a commitment and strong knowledge and understanding of the field of African and African American Studies
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity through teaching, scholarship, or service
  • Experience teaching online courses

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to teach courses and understand Africa-centered pedagogy and curricular philosophy
  • Familiarity with Pan-African Political thought and praxis as well as other Africana philosophies
  • Experience supervising students in practicums or internships
  • Awareness of experiential and hands-on opportunities in the discipline
