Coral Reef Management Fellow - American Samoa

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is seeking a Coral Reef Management Fellow for the American Samoa Coral Reef Advisory Group Coordinator (CRAG), based in Pago Pago.

The Fellowship Program's mission is two-fold: to provide coral reef management support and to provide individual fellows with professional opportunities and training in coastal and coral reef resource management.

The Fellow will work with the local and federal CRAG agencies to build local capacity with a target of community engagement in restoration. The three goals of this 2-year coral fellowship are to build local capacity, support ongoing monitoring, and response monitoring.

Responsibilities:

  • Build local capacity by engaging communities in hands-on restoration activities, workshops, and training sessions.
  • Support CRAG’s Education and Outreach Coordinator in delivering school-based outreach activities.
  • Participate in in-water coral restoration and monitoring activities.
  • Work closely with instructors at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) to deliver restoration-related activities.
  • Support Coral Restoration Planning and Continued Development of Restoration Action Plan.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or Resource Management with at least two years of experience in tropical marine science and/or management.
  • Knowledge of coral reef restoration principles and techniques.
  • Competence with snorkeling and swimming in lagoon and ocean conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to review and edit content and grammar of a technical and scientific nature.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fluency in conversational Samoan language.
  • Experience with collecting field data, and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of coral reef ecology, restoration techniques, and monitoring methods.
