The Shift Supervisor performs as a supervisor on an assigned shift in the 911 Communications Center under the direct supervision of the Operations Manager. Works as a Senior Telecommunicator and is responsible for supervision of the shift. It requires a considerable degree of initiative and independent judgment within procedural boundaries in responding to citizens and emergency services requests.
Responsibilities include:
- Ensures appropriate staffing for on-the-floor operations and maintaining online calendars
- Assists with employee timecards by approving timecards and notifying personnel of any corrections that need to be made.
- Serves as first point of contact for shift callouts and personnel issues.
- Receives and approves/disapproves time off requests and shift trades.
- Completes yearly evaluations on the Telecommunicators assigned to their designated shifts.
- Receives and responds to emergency and non-emergency calls from the public, emergency personnel, and other agencies via telephone, radio systems and computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems;
- Processes and evaluates information received, prioritizes calls and dispatches required units and/or agencies;
- Monitors and coordinates unit activity and assignments via radio frequencies.
- Maintains status and locations of public safety personnel.
- Utilizes technology such as computers, radio systems, telephones, fax machines and other communication equipment.
- Creates and maintains automated or manual logs of central communications activity;
- Accesses and enters sensitive data in local/state/national databases;
- Enters and maintains files for persons or property pending apprehension/recovery;
- Maintains appropriate security and confidentiality of information created or encountered in the performance of assigned duties;
- Keeps informed of departmental regulations, policies and procedures.
- Oversees Telecommunicators on assigned shifts
- Performs all other duties and requested and needed.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. required with an associate degree or further education preferred.
- At least five years’ experience working as a Lead Telecommunicator or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficient and thorough knowledge of federal and state regulations governing transmission by radio and teletype;
- Thorough knowledge of the policies and procedures pertaining to the communications system;
- Thorough knowledge of CAD and DCI.
- Candidate must have superior knowledge of emergency services' terminology and procedures, knowledge of Alamance County geography and surrounding areas and the ability to think clearly and act quickly in emergency situations.
Computer Skills: Must have a basic to intermediate functional knowledge of computers. Will be required to complete a computer-based exam and score at an acceptable level.
License/Credentials: Possession of a NC valid driver’s license. Must maintain and possess Sheriff Standard’s Certification, EMD. EFD, EPD, DCI, CPR.
Physical Demands: Sit constantly, stand, walk, and manually manipulate occasionally. Reach outward, reach above shoulder, climb, squat or kneel occasionally. Talk and hear constantly, see constantly.
Work Environment: Office Environment – Low-light conditions, discerning distinct colors used by a computer aided dispatch system.
