Overview The school maintenance engineer is responsible for cleaning, repairing, protecting, and maintaining the school’s facilities on both campuses. This role performs various trades throughout the day including, but not limited to, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, drywalling, and painting.
Responsibilities
Conduct Routine Inspections: Regularly inspect school buildings and grounds for potential maintenance issues, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural components.
HVAC System Maintenance: Oversee the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, including replacing filters, cleaning coils and condensate lines, and troubleshooting.
Plumbing Maintenance: Inspect and repair plumbing systems, including fixing leaks, unclogging drains, changing water filters, repairing toilets, sinks, and faucets.
Electrical Maintenance: Maintain electrical systems, including lighting, circuit breakers, power outlets, and other electrical devices. Troubleshoot and repair electrical issues, ensuring compliance with electrical codes and safety standards.
Drywalling and Painting repairs: Repair damaged walls with the proper compound, prepare areas for repairs or painting, sanding, and apply proper painting techniques.
Assemble Furniture: Read manufacturers assembly guides. Assemble furniture ranging from desks/tables, chairs, risers, and related items.
Preventative Maintenance: Complete assigned preventive maintenance tasks in a timely manner.
Work Order Management: Monitor and update work orders using computer or mobile device; close out tasks assigned to you.
Safety Guidelines: Perform work in compliance with OSHA guidelines and ensure proper PPE is used for each job.
Reporting: Report any safety or hazardous conditions around campus to the Plant Supervisor immediately.
Additional Responsibilities
Assist other departments (events, custodians, etc.) as needed.
Attend departmental and, when applicable, school-wide meetings.
Qualifications
Proficiency in speaking and writing in English; fluency in Spanish is a +.
Ability to work weekends when needed, especially for mandatory work events.
Keep work area and shop clean and organized.
Ability to read shop drawings, floor plans, electrical schematics, and other building documents (preferred).
Possess ability to drive a vehicle (car, forklift, scissor lift, etc.).
Minimum of 3 years of experience in at least one trade (Electrical, HVAC, painting, plumbing, etc.).
A certification in any field is a plus.
Ability to operate a computer and navigate Microsoft Office and email.
Professional communication with team members is required.
Must possess a valid California Driver’s License and be insurable by the school’s insurance company.
Applicants must pass FBI and California background checks and test negative for TB.
Working Conditions / Physical Demands
This is a full-time, non-exempt position eligible for health, dental, vision, disability, pension benefits, and tuition remission as per the personnel manual for non-teaching employees. This is a 12-month position with two weeks of vacation plus holidays as per the personnel manual.
Standard work hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM; occasional evening or weekend work may be required for special events.
This is an “At will” employment.
Physical Abilities
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (sometimes up to 75 lbs) and perform physical tasks such as bending, reaching, and lifting for extended periods.
Stand and walk for extended periods.
Work in confined spaces (attics, crawl spaces, basements, machinery rooms) requiring bending, kneeling, or crawling.
Climb ladders or scaffolding to access high areas (rooftops, ceilings, HVAC units).
Performance Expectations / Goals
Complete work orders in a timely manner and communicate issues as they arise.
Complete preventive maintenance within the assigned week.
Cross-learning in other trades and applying that knowledge on campus.
Cross-training between campuses and understanding the needs of each campus.
Training And Development
Onboarding training (New Hire Orientation).
OSHA-based safety training.
Opportunity to shadow other Maintenance Engineers for cross-training.
Schooling and certification courses may be offered after the first year of employment.
