Job Description Ares Management Corporation (“Ares” or “the firm”) is looking for a professional to join the Ares Charitable Foundation (“the Foundation”) in New York, Los Angeles, or Denver. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that aims to accelerate economic equity and equality globally through strategic investments in career preparation, reskilling, entrepreneurship, and personal finance. Established in 2021, it operates with the same rigor and entrepreneurial spirit as the firm, engaging in grantmaking and mission-aligned initiatives to strengthen communities where Ares stakeholders live and work. The Controller will oversee the Foundation’s accounting policies, procedures, and financial controls, leading accounting and financial reporting activities, maintaining oversight of the general ledger, accounting, billing, and accounts payable. They will monitor revenues from donations, lead audits, and manage external and internal financial reporting, reporting to the President of the Foundation. The ideal candidate will have extensive nonprofit accounting and financial management experience, preferably as an Assistant Controller or higher, with excellent project management skills, attention to detail, and a process-improvement mindset. Primary Responsibilities Oversee all operational accounting activities, including general ledger, cash management, expense and revenue accounting, billing, and accounts payable. Interpret and summarize contribution and grant agreements for restrictions. Ensure compliance with GAAP and regulatory standards. Lead internal and external financial reporting, including quarterly reports to the Foundation’s Board and annual reports such as Form 990 and audits. Manage billing processes, accounts payable, and cash flow. Support development activities, including donor reporting and stewardship. Implement and maintain internal controls and policies to improve financial operations. Assist in budget development and quarterly reforecasting. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, or equivalent experience. At least 10 years of relevant experience, preferably in nonprofit accounting at a senior level. Proven success in nonprofit financial management. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and financial systems. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Self-motivated with excellent judgment and discretion. General Requirements Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to build stakeholder relationships and handle confidential information. Flexibility with hours to accommodate different time zones. Ability to lift 35 lbs safely. Reporting Line Managing Director and President of the Ares Charitable Foundation Compensation Salary range: $150,000 - $175,000, plus potential performance bonus.
