Senior Civil Engineer - Water (Chicago) Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer - Water in Chicago to join our growing Water practice. The role involves leading civil design on capital programs in northeastern Illinois, with opportunities to step into leadership roles on unique and complex projects that are completed in a short time frame to enable larger sewer rehab initiatives.

Responsibilities

Lead civil design of projects from conceptual phase through design completion according to project manager needs and requirements.

Prepare civil equipment: packaged equipment and construction specifications and data sheets, RFQs, technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.

Review civil vendor drawings; interface data with suppliers, clients, other engineering disciplines, detailers and designers.

Participate in development of project schedule, scope, budget and staffing; plan construction; manage change orders effectively.

Apply expert knowledge of civil concepts, codes and procedures; compile studies and reports; write specifications.

Develop non-standard design solutions for complex projects.

Quality review production drawings and project data to verify design compliance and constructability.

Coordinate construction administration with field personnel to resolve installation issues, calculations, inspections and material testing.

Lead field inspections, installation measurements or calculations for public and private clients.

Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.

Build relationships with clients, customers and contractors; strive to meet customer satisfaction goals.

Participate in sales and marketing efforts; identify, lead and manage key pursuits.

Develop cost proposals and qualification statements to meet financial targets.

Prepare, present and manage project budgets and cost estimates; report project performance.

Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to the civil engineering practice; mentor less experienced engineers.

Ensure QA/QC process adherence and effective communication with other engineering disciplines.

Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.

Performs other duties as assigned and complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program and 7 years of civil engineering experience; EPC project experience preferred (or equal combinations as listed).

Alternative: Bachelor Degree in Civil or related Engineering Technology from ABET-accredited program with successful FE exam and 7 years civil engineering experience; EPC project experience preferred.

Master Degree in Civil Engineering with 6 years civil engineering experience; EPC project experience preferred.

Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures; strong computer skills (AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, PLS, PLS-CADD, RISA-3D, MathCADD) and/or hydraulic, hydrologic, pavement, civil analysis programs.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience leading discipline design for large projects and delegating work to team members; ability to lead execution and resolve issues in a team environment.

Demonstrated critical thinking and methodical, analytical problem-solving abilities.

Strong attention to detail, facilitation, teamwork, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.

Ability to travel.

Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.

Compensation $140,000.00 - $185,000.00 yearly. The total annual compensation package includes base salary and eligibility for discretionary year-end incentive bonus. The posted range complies with local/state regulations and factors such as education, experience and location.
