The YMCA of Greater New York is here for all New Yorkers — to empower youth, improve health, and strengthen community. Founded in 1852, today the Y serves a diverse population of more than half a million New Yorkers who learn, grow, and thrive through programs and services at our 24 branches. Community is the cornerstone of the Y. Together, we connect active, engaged New Yorkers to build stronger communities.
To help fulfill our mission, we cultivate a culture of learning, leading, and collaboration to enhance community impact. Through our talented staff and “LEAP” career framework (Leadership, Empowerment, Accountability, Personal Growth), we are committed to a people-first approach that fosters trust, inclusion, growth, and development for all.
The Flushing YMCA is seeking a Fire Safety Director (FSD). Under the supervision of the Building Manager, the FSD will ensure a customer-friendly, clean, safe, and secure facility for all guests, members, and employees. Train building employees, members, and guests on fire prevention and evacuation procedures. Conduct monthly fire drills for related programs, such as DOH Afterschool, camps, and Transitional housing. Inspect fire alarm and communication systems lamp test daily, and all fire alarm components semi-annually. Serve as a Manager on Duty (MOD) in the absence of branch leadership. Assist the front desk with overnight guestroom check-ins. Monitor the fire command station and complete building rounds as needed. Ensure the safety and security of all guests, members, and employees, as well as protecting the assets (physical, monetary, and reputation) of the Flushing YMCA. In the event of an actual emergency, act as liaison between first responders and the YMCA branch operation. Such emergency conditions may include fire, police, and emergency medical response teams. Maintain knowledge (through communication with Centers and training) of all center events and conditions related to their operations. Perform all assignments from branch management related to the operation of the facility, special events, etc. Maintain accurate logs of overnight activities, incidents, and any significant interactions with residents. Prepare reports for management review. Serve as the primary point of contact for residents, YMCA staff, and external agencies during overnight hours. Relay important information to day-shift staff during shift handover. Check in on transitional floors by doing rounds periodically throughout the night shift. Responsible for contacting the Executive Director, Building Manager, or appropriate staff in the event of any unusual circumstances. Proactively address facility safety hazards. Complete and submit the overnight reports within 24 hours of the end of each shift. Uphold all Association policies and demonstrate values of Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Honesty.
