Indirect Tax Manager – Plano, TX The Indirect Tax Manager will oversee all aspects of indirect tax compliance and audit activities for entities operating across multiple states. This leadership role includes managing a third-party provider for sales tax compliance and an internal team handling property tax and other indirect tax responsibilities. The ideal candidate will combine technical tax expertise with strong leadership, vendor management, and communication skills.

Job Responsibilities

Provide strategic leadership and oversight for all indirect tax compliance, including: Sales and use tax, Property tax, Gross receipts, Business licenses, and Unclaimed property.

Manage and develop an outsourced property tax team, ensuring performance and effective resource allocation.

Oversee and maintain the relationship with the third-party sales tax provider, including monitoring performance, resolving issues, and ensuring contract compliance.

Ensure accurate preparation, review, and reconciliation of sales data for over 200 monthly tax returns across multiple jurisdictions.

Maintain filing schedules and ensure timely, accurate payments and compliance across all operating entities.

Serve as the primary point of contact for state and local tax authorities, including management of tax notices and audit inquiries.

Lead state and local audit defense, refund claims, amended returns, and related tax controversy matters.

Conduct and oversee tax research, providing guidance to internal teams and maintaining compliance with current laws and regulations.

Identify and drive opportunities for process automation and efficiency improvements within the tax function.

Oversee the maintenance and enhancement of indirect tax systems, including integration with ERP and POS platforms.

Keep tax documentation and procedure manuals up to date with current practices and changes in law.

Lead special projects and deliver strategic analysis as needed by senior leadership.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

7+ years of progressive experience in corporate tax, public accounting, or related roles, with at least 4 years focused on indirect tax.

Minimum 2 years of experience managing teams, vendors, or projects in a multi-state or enterprise-level environment.

Experience managing outsourced or third-party tax compliance providers.

Demonstrated success in leading teams and improving tax processes through automation and best practices.

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (including PivotTables, VLOOKUP, and database functions); Word and Access also preferred.

Experience with SAP and Thomson Reuters OneSource Sales & Use Compliance is highly desirable.

Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative leadership style.

Ability to manage competing priorities in a complex and fast-paced environment.

CMI (Certified Member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation) certification is a plus.
