Overview
Director of Major Gifts, Department of Medicine (DAR-FJHM) – Requisition ID: 118962. The Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins’ focus on research, teaching and patient care. This role develops and fosters relationships to secure philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine, aligning donor conversations with organizational priorities.
The Johns Hopkins Hospital is ranked #1 in Rheumatology (U.S. News & World Report, 2024-2025). This position supports staffing a development board for the Lyme Disease Research Center and aims to establish a new Rheumatology board in FY26. Some travel is required. All fundraising activity is coordinated within the Department of Medicine, the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, and the central development office of Johns Hopkins University.
Key Responsibilities
Identify, research, and manage a portfolio of complex prospects with a primary focus on major and leadership gifts at the $1M–$5M level; occasionally secure gifts at the $5M+ principal giving level.
Plan annual work goals in consultation with departmental/divisional development leadership.
Plan and execute solicitation strategies leading to major and leadership gifts.
Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward high-capacity prospects and donors; advise donors and stakeholders on giving avenues.
Prepare and present compelling proposals to secure six- and seven-figure gifts; lead negotiations and ensure successful gift closures.
Build and maintain strong donor relationships to enable future solicitations and increased giving.
Collaborate with DAR and University leadership on solicitation efforts; support high-priority, high-visibility projects with DAR leadership.
Participate in strategic planning and contribute to fundraising initiatives.
Develop deep understanding of divisional/departmental missions, programs, and partnerships to communicate funding opportunities; stay informed about collaborative priorities and goals.
Partner with faculty and leadership to shape and refine the philanthropic agenda for a unit to maximize donor appeal.
Collaborate with fundraising professionals across DAR to align with broader strategies (foundation, corporate, and planned giving) and develop new institutional relationships for blended gifts.
Provide coaching and mentorship to junior staff; implement pipeline-building strategies using data analytics and outreach.
Create reports on gift activities and progress toward goals for unit leadership.
Other duties as assigned.
In Addition To The Duties Described Above
Serve as the primary development liaison to faculty in the division of Rheumatology; engage faculty to participate in development activities and coordinate solicitations.
Manage a portfolio of approximately 100–115 prospects, focusing on gifts from $100,000 to $3 million+, and complete 90+ meaningful donor interactions per fiscal year.
Provide board oversight and staff with a single development board for the Lyme Disease Research Center, with a goal to establish a new board for Rheumatology.
Develop a comprehensive understanding of all Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine procedures and the central development office.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree.
Seven years of professional-level related experience, with two years of fundraising experience at the major gift level.
Equivalencies may substitute for required education/experience as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree (Master’s or JD).
Higher education and/or academic medical fundraising experience.
Proven success closing 7-figure+ gifts and complex gifts (outright, pledged, and deferred).
