Staff Research Associate III (9611C) - Physics at Inside Higher Ed (UC Berkeley) – The University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a Staff Research Associate III in Physics. The position reports to the Director of Instructional Support (R&D Engineer Supervisor) and will set up, prepare and support daily lecture demonstrations and weekly lab experiments; research and design new demonstrations/experiments in consultation with faculty, supervisor, and outside experts; and collaborate with staff to prepare and disassemble weekly laboratory experiments. The role requires independent research, analysis, and proposal of new educational materials, maintaining the collection, and ordering materials and supplies. The Staff Research Associate also meets with GSIs and faculty to understand their needs.

Lecture Demonstrations and Support of Undergraduate Instruction: Prepare lecture demonstrations, advance setup of apparatus, and instruct faculty in safe and effective use of materials. Inspect and maintain equipment, diagnose malfunctions, replace/repair as needed, and recommend new equipment. Develop new demonstrations based on best practices and instructors’ needs; research, design, and fabricate or purchase new apparatus; ensure safety, economy, and educational effectiveness. Create, maintain, and update a physics lecture demonstration website with services, resources, procedures, abstracts, and staff contact information. Maintain and improve a historic collection of ~600 demonstrations; assist in budgeting, class schedules, and renovation planning; revise the online catalogue; support department events; and perform administrative tasks such as master schedule preparation and equipment tracking. Maintain safe work environments and proper storage/disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials; manage chemical inventory and promote safe procedures for electrical, mechanical, and laser hazards. 35%

Laboratory Preparation and Support: Perform experiment preparation, stock checks, and weekly lab setups; collaborate with instructors/GSIs to use lab equipment effectively; organize lab cleanups between classes. Test and calibrate equipment; diagnose malfunctions and arrange repairs. Maintain and improve ~50 laboratory experiments; participate in equipment planning and budgeting; manage administrative tasks and inventories. 10%

Innovation and Development of New Demonstrations/Experiments/Equipment: Develop and modify demonstrations/experiments/equipment; evaluate new techniques and equipment for faculty; determine needs through observation, interviews, and feedback; consider safety, economy, standards, and durability. Assist with proposals for extramural funding for curricular development and major equipment purchases. 5%

Education Materials and Outreach: Create educational materials and outreach resources; research and fabricate/purchase new apparatus; develop outreach activities to promote understanding of scientific method and physics principles; coordinate and present programs with faculty and student volunteers; engage with external educational organizations. Qualifications

Required: Working knowledge of undergraduate-level physics, mathematics, and chemistry. Technical knowledge of electrical equipment, mechanical apparatus, vacuum and magnetic equipment, digital counters, logic devices, electronic test equipment, and radiation. Computer skills with hardware/software installation, maintenance, and removal. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills; ability to manage multiple responsibilities under deadlines. Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in Physics, Education, or related field. Ability to troubleshoot and repair/manipulate mechanical and electrical apparatus; basic fabrication skills. Graduate training in science education, physics, engineering, or related physical sciences. Ability to use software for publishing, graphics, web authoring, data acquisition, and analysis. Experience in physics teaching or science education workshops; awareness of current instructional literature and methods. Salary & Benefits

The budgeted salary range for this position is $79,385.98 – $89,409.01 yearly ($6,615.50 – $7,450.75 monthly). This is a 100% FTE career position, eligible for full benefits.
