Correctional Program Specialist II
role at Anne Arundel County Department of Detention Facilities. This is a full-time, permanent, safety-sensitive position. The Detention Facilities serve the citizens of Anne Arundel County by professionally managing safe and secure correctional facilities and offering programs and services to pretrial and convicted individuals to support successful re-entry to the community. Some weekend and/or holiday hours may be required. Position involves providing programmatic services that deliver classification, counseling and supervision to inmates or program participants, including work release, alternative sentence programs, or pretrial services. Responsibilities
Perform case management and programmatic services for inmates and/or program participants under general supervision. Conduct program intake interviews; assign classification ratings; gather social histories; participate in classification, reclassification, and status review board hearings. Develop, monitor and coordinate individualized program plans to maximize programming efficacy within facilities and post-release resource delivery to ensure successful community transition. Conduct job and home site visits; testify in court hearings; participate in meetings with mid-level managers and Center administration; establish appropriate communication channels. Assist in planning, directing and managing Detention Center programs for custody, security, welfare, programming and reintegration of inmates. Apply facility policy and procedure, submit and review required reports, and address inmate needs using case management principles. Complete required paperwork and reports (e.g., program agreements, pre-release interviews, parole summaries, intake and entry conferences, reassessments, reclassification interviews, pretrial interviews, inmate requests, job site checks) and maintain records. Review and approve classification reports prepared by Correctional Program Specialist I; assess inmates for potential interventions (psychiatric evaluation, substance abuse services, academic training, or other programs). Evaluate and assign inmates to work programs; interpret and verify information in court and legal documents; investigate inmate concerns using automated systems and resource manuals. Evaluate program efficiency and support supervisors and managers in improving service delivery; perform related duties as required. Ensure safe operation of a motor vehicle for court hearings and site visits; may require hours beyond the normal workday. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of counseling principles and case management. Ability to learn and apply modern corrections practices, methods, techniques, equipment and program methodologies. Ability to operate motor vehicles; read and apply rules and regulations; establish effective working relationships with staff, public, and inmates. Ability to prepare standard and non-routine reports; apply safety practices for inmates and visitors; assist in planning program operations; use sound judgment in decision making; communicate effectively (verbal and written). Ability to meet selection standards promulgated by the County and Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission; ability to complete the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Academy Entry Level Training Program and annual training requirements. Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in criminal justice, corrections, or the social sciences. Experience:
Two (2) or more years of experience in criminal justice. Other Requirements
A minimum age of 18 at the time of appointment. A valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license. Substitutions
Two (2) or more years of experience in criminal justice may be substituted with a combination of: graduate-level studies or master’s degree; responsible work experience including internships/volunteering; or experience conducting independent research, creating reports, coordinating information, or communications. Supplemental Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants who possess: Experience evaluating clients to determine needs (psychiatric evaluation, substance abuse services, academic/remedial and/or other support services). Experience beyond a beginner level with Microsoft Word and Excel. Knowledge of (or access to) medical/health insurance plans, dental and vision insurance, life insurance, disability income insurance, pension plans, deferred compensation, and other voluntary benefits. Experience with insurance and benefits administration is a plus. Other benefits commonly associated with County employment may include leave accruals, holidays, and employee assistance programs, but specific offerings should be confirmed in the current benefits summary.
