Overview The Lead Career Counselor for Strategic Partnerships supports the diverse career development needs of Cal Poly students, empowering them to achieve lifelong, meaningful career success. Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Career Education and Equity, this role provides individual and group counseling, program management, campus collaborations, and outreach. It serves as a College Specialist with direct liaison responsibilities for the College of Architecture and Environmental Design and also provides generalist support across other colleges as needed. The position independently manages multiple programmatic initiatives within Career Services, including the student and alumni networking program, key campus partnerships to increase access to career education, and strategic career education initiatives. All Career Services staff are expected to foster a positive workplace culture and demonstrate leadership and professionalism.
Responsibilities
Provide comprehensive individual and group advisement to students and recent alumni on educational and vocational goals.
Apply knowledge of individual and group behavior, and career counseling or academic advising techniques.
Organize and manage multiple assignments with fluctuating deadlines; maintain effective time management.
Create and maintain accurate records and present data clearly for reports (monthly, quarterly, annually, etc.).
Support student and alumni networking, first-generation student initiatives, and strategic partnerships across large organizations.
Lead and collaborate on initiatives within Career Services and contribute to a positive and professional department culture.
Qualifications
Equivalent to a four-year college degree in a related field, plus or supplemented by relevant counseling/academic advising coursework. Three years of professional student services experience.
A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or related field may substitute for one year of experience.
A doctorate with internship/training in counseling may substitute for the three years of experience for roles with major counseling responsibilities.
Thorough knowledge of individual and group behavior, and career counseling or academic advising techniques.
Strong organizational and time-management skills; ability to coordinate multiple assignments with deadlines.
Education And Experience
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field; three years of progressively responsible professional student services experience.
Master’s degree substitutions as noted above; doctoral substitution for relevant roles.
Salary And Benefits Anticipated Hiring Range: $66,480 - $72,500 per year
Classification Range: $66,480 - $94,716 per year
