Environmental Health & Safety Specialist
Vast is searching for an Environmental Health & Safety Specialist I or II, reporting to the Environmental Health & Safety Supervisor, to support the development of the systems required for the design and build of artificial-gravity human-rated space stations. This is a full-time, exempt position located in Long Beach, CA.
Overview Join a mission-driven team focused on building space habitats. The EHS Specialist will represent the EHS Department across departments, help implement site-specific EHS policies, and ensure regulatory compliance and safe handling of hazardous materials throughout operations.
Responsibilities
Represent the EHS Department by actively being on-site and collaborating with all Departments across the company.
Implement and ensure adherence to site-specific EHS policies including Job Hazard Analysis, PPE selection, and On the Job Training.
Conduct EHS inspections (e.g., portable fire extinguishers, emergency lighting/exits, fall protection equipment, lifting straps and slings).
Oversee compliance with CAL OSHA, RCRA, EPA, SCAQMD, DOT, DTSC, and CUPA regulations.
Manage tasks related to handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste under RCRA LQG requirements.
Oversee hazardous waste storage areas, including weekly inspections, labeling, and housekeeping.
Maintain records including manifests and Bill of Lading; manage spill response supplies and safety equipment.
Maintain PPE, fall protection, LOTO, monitoring equipment, and testing supplies; communicate with Operations & Facilities teams about EHS planning and permits.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma
2+ years of experience implementing and overseeing environmental, health, and safety programs
Preferred Skills & Experience
Experience developing and implementing health and safety plans and policies
Hands-on experience with emergency response involving hazardous and non-hazardous releases
Expertise in hazardous waste storage and satellite accumulation areas
Experience conducting safety audits and identifying unsafe conditions
Proficiency in Google Workspace and MS Office
Comfortable in construction or industrial settings
Excellent written and verbal communication
Ability to work in a fast-paced startup environment
Desire to foster a positive work culture
Additional Requirements
Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends to support critical mission milestones
Ability to lift up to 25 lbs unassisted
Travel up to 10% of the time (Long Beach/Hawthorne/Mojave campuses)
Ability to stand for extended periods during facility inspections
Ability to wear required PPE, including respirators, safety toe shoes, hearing protection, and safety glasses
Ability to climb ladders and access elevated work areas for safety audits
Certifications as appropriate (e.g., DOT 49 CFR, Title 22 RCRA)
Pay Range
Environmental Health & Safety Specialist I: $73,700 – $103,880
Environmental Health & Safety Specialist II: $96,600 – $136,220
Salary Range: California — $73,700 to $136,220 USD
Compensation And Benefits Base salary will vary based on knowledge, education, skills, experience, and market demand.
