Overview

Lead Software Engineer on the Engineering Practices team focused on transforming and modernizing how Wellmark engineers develop software. This role helps create repeatable processes, sets engineering standards, and influences cloud‑based solutions, IaC, CI/CD, DevOps practices, and Microservices architecture. The position also includes designing, developing, and maintaining the internal developer portal and serving as a technical resource for engineering staff. Responsibilities

Lead system development and engineering for highly complex programs, coordinating the preparation, coding, testing, and debugging of complex programs; analyze and develop workflows that utilize emerging technology to meet Wellmark’s evolving business needs. Serve as subject matter expert in implementing innovative and cost‑effective solutions for multiple applications and systems, utilizing information technology, business, and industry trends. Provide leadership, training, and guidance to the team in information gathering, root cause analysis, problem definition and formulation, solution implementation, verification, and ongoing optimization; ensure defects are analyzed to identify root causes and opportunities for improvement. Mentor and problem‑solve with other technology areas in solution development and implementation, including how to use new or enhanced software/applications. Coordinate with company resources to integrate products and processes and deliver complex solutions with timely, accurate results and strong customer service. Utilize established relationships with Wellmark leaders and act as a primary consultant on business status, issues, process improvements, and technology enhancements or capabilities. Participate in project proposals, estimates, and proof‑of‑concept activities as needed. Maintain awareness of industry best practices and standards; provide direction for enterprise standards; conduct code reviews and monitor adherence to standards. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, or related field and at least 5 years of development experience (e.g., Angular, NodeJS, TypeScript, C++, .NET, Java, SQL) OR 9 years of related experience. Strong analytical problem‑solving skills, high attention to detail, and ability to troubleshoot and develop creative technical solutions. Demonstrated experience with software development lifecycle methodologies. Ability to communicate with and coach/mentor team members, maintain a positive attitude, stay calm under pressure, be approachable, respectful, and take responsibility for failures. Big picture thinker with ability to translate the WaaS strategy to company design and development decisions. Strong ability to gather information, perform root cause analysis, recommend solutions, verify results, and optimize using data. Ability to build relationships and communicate key information to stakeholders; adjust communication style as needed. Ability to thrive in fast‑paced environments with changing priorities; strong organizational skills and time management; ensure data integrity. Eagerness to learn and stay current on industry trends with a continuous learning mindset. Ability to collaborate and work as a team to achieve goals; earn trust and respect from peers, leadership, and stakeholders; apply coaching feedback.
