Overview

The City of Peekskill, located in Westchester County, is seeking a part-time Secretary to the Corporation Counsel. The Corporation Counsel’s Office is in charge of, and conducts all of the legal business of the municipal corporation which is the City of Peekskill. The Corporation Counsel represents the elected and the administrative officials, City employees and the City government in general in all legal matters, as well as advise the Mayor and City Council, the City Manager and all City Departments, draft legislation, negotiate labor issues, real estate transactions including in rem proceedings, and various other contracts. Experience in a law firm or municipal legal experience is a plus. The ideal candidate must be familiar with Microsoft Word, have experience working with outside counsel and insurance carriers regarding litigation matters, must obtain and/or maintain a Notary Public license in the State of New York, and must demonstrate the ability to work in a team environment. Perform administrative and secretarial duties for the Corporation Counsel and department staff. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Prepare Court Docket for City Code Violations Calendar. Perform customer service functions and provide assistance to the public when seeking non-legal information. Perform a variety of administrative/secretarial duties such as answering phone calls and taking and relaying messages, developing and typing correspondence, memos, or other documents, scheduling appointments and/or meetings, assisting with preparation of reports, filing and maintaining confidential files, faxing, photocopying, and typing documents, etc. Must work closely with Corporation Counsel, Assistant Corporation Counsel, outside counsel and the city’s insurance provider on all matters of litigation. Must maintain clear records of, and monitor, all matters within the office. Receive, sort, file and/or distribute incoming documents, mail and correspondence. Take deliveries and receive served documents. Prepare and draft contracts, litigation papers, In Rem Foreclosure Proceedings, Tax Certioraris, resolutions, and other court/legal documentation as requested. Coordinate calendars/schedules for attorneys. Prepare payroll, attendance, mail, and voucher payments. Order Supplies as necessary. Maintain all legal documents, contracts and filing electronically. Must maintain Notary Public status, or obtain such status as early as possible after appointment. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES The Secretary to Corporation Counsel does not have any supervisory responsibilities. Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (As adopted by the Westchester County Human Resources Department) No required qualifications as positions in this class are placed in the exempt class in accordance with the provisions of Section 41 (1d) of the Civil Service Law. However, Westchester County has established the following

Desirable Acceptable Training and Experience : High school graduation or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and either: (a) four (4) years of secretarial, typing or clerical experience, which must have included use of automated systems, two (2) years of which must have been in a legal office environment; or (b) eight (8) years of secretarial, typing or clerical experience, which must have included use of automated systems, two (2) years of which must have been in a legal office environment; or (c) a satisfactory equivalent combination of the foregoing training and experience.
