Abode, one of the largest and effective nonprofits working to end homelessness in the Bay Area, is seeking a Kitchen Coordinator for our Kirk Emergency Shelter site in San Jose. Flexible shift from 7AM-6PM
– must be flexible to work evening and weekend hours when required. About the role
The Kitchen Coordinator is responsible for the oversight of kitchen operations and supervision of meal services program, inventory supply, volunteers, and staff at an Abode homeless shelter. This position is also responsible for completing required reports, intake and exit procedures for participants, and conducting required training for volunteers and staff. How You Make An Impact
Develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relations with meal service program volunteers. Be on site and accessible to meal service program volunteers during meal preparation and service. Develop and implement an acceptable clean kitchen and equipment program. Provide information and recommendations to the Shelter Manager regarding program evaluation and modifications to better meet needs of the kitchen, meal program, and inventory control. Ensure proper maintenance of kitchen, dining rooms, kitchen equipment, and storage pantries. Maintain data quality control and reporting measures of the food service program. Complete monthly meal report by the 3rd of the month. Control food inventory and program supplies. Shop for large quantities of program supplies 2-3 times monthly, within budget guidelines. Ensure resident’s bag lunch program is prepared on a daily basis. Assist with stocking the food pantries at other Abode Services’ sites. Plan and supervise cooking of meals when not provided by a meal volunteer group. Monitor and maintain the inventory, supplies, and condition of the kitchen. Ensure dining rooms and kitchen are stocked with necessary meal service supplies (plates, bowls, silverware, cups, etc.). Develop and implement general kitchen, meal preparation, and serving and cleaning procedures. Handle food donations; utilize food grown in Sunrise Village garden. Purge kitchen refrigerators and food pantry at least twice a week; purge freezers once a week and additional food storage spaces 1-2 times a quarter. Ensure all expired and spoiled food is disposed of in a timely manner. Maintain acceptable standards of professional conduct. Attend outside meetings or training pertaining to the safety and wellbeing of the meal service program. Assist at the front desk as needed. Act as a member of a cohesive team. Maintain professional image. Conduct SafeServ training for volunteers and staff 1-2 times a quarter. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED). 1 year experience in customer services. SafeServ certification and SafeServ trainer certification is required. Role requires a vehicle and some driving. Use of personal vehicle and proof of valid California Driver's License and current auto insurance, along with a clean DMV record, is required. Flexible schedule to work evening and weekend hours when required. Competencies
Excellent verbal & written communication, organizational, confidentiality and time management skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail. Ability to work well independently and collaboratively with teams, with little supervision. Ability to handle multiple tasks. Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds. Experience working with homeless, low-income, or other related social services. Previous experience or training in a kitchen/meal service and janitorial services. Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, systems, and platforms. Ability to learn and use required mobile devices and business-related applications. Outstanding communication skills and high degree of emotional intelligence, cultural humility, with a proven track record to build and maintain effective relationships with a wide variety of internal and external contacts.
