Position Summary

The Chief Financial and Operating Officer (CFOO) is a key member of the senior leadership team, responsible for overseeing the financial health and operational management of the school. The CFOO provides strategic financial leadership, ensuring long-term sustainability while upholding the mission, values, and strategic goals of the school. This position reports directly to the Head of School and works closely with the Board of Trustees, Finance Committee, and other key stakeholders.

The CFOO directly oversees four departments within the school: Business Office, Facilities, Security, and Information Technology. In addition, the CFOO serves as the Administrative Liaison to 4 committees of the Board of Trustee: Finance Committee, Investment Committee, Audit Committee, and the Building and Grounds Committee. This role requires collaborating with all departments within the school including, but not limited to, Advancement, Admissions, Lower School, Middle School, Upper School, Fine Arts, and Athletics.

Primary Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Strategic Planning Develop and execute a comprehensive financial strategy to ensure the School’s fiscal sustainability. Prepare annual budgets, longterm financial models, and forecasts in collaboration with the Head of School and Finance Committee. Coordinate tuition revenue management, financial aid budgeting, and endowment investment strategy in partnership with the Board of Trustees. Lead financial planning and analysis (FP&A), including cash flow management, expense forecasting, and multiyear capital planning. Provide clear financial reports and recommendations to the Head of School, Finance Committee, and Board of Trustees. Oversee risk management policies and ensure compliance with state and federal financial regulations. Business Office & Accounting Management Supervise the Business Office, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and best practices in independent school finance. Lead the annual audit process, ensuring transparency and accountability in financial reporting. Oversee payroll processing, employee benefits administration, and compliance with employment laws. Monitor accounts payable/receivable, purchasing, and general ledger management. Ensure internal financial controls are in place and properly maintained. Facilities & Campus Operations Oversee maintenance, safety, security, and capital improvements of the school’s facilities and grounds. Develop and execute longterm campus master plans in coordination with the Building and Grounds Committee. Manage construction projects, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety regulations. Ensure safety protocols, emergency preparedness plans, and regulatory compliance for all school buildings and grounds. Human Resources & Employee Relations Supervise the HR function, including recruitment, compensation, benefits, training, and compliance. Ensure alignment of HR policies with NAIS and ISAS best practices and employment law. Foster a positive workplace culture through effective HR policies and employee engagement initiatives. Oversee employee benefits, retirement plans, and professional development programs. Technology & Information Systems Oversee IT infrastructure, ensuring the school’s data security, network reliability, and technology strategy support academic and operational needs. Develop technology budgeting and planning in collaboration with the IT Director. Ensure compliance with data privacy laws, cybersecurity protocols, and best practices for independent schools. Auxiliary Programs & Revenue Generation Manage the Dining Services program (food), Spirit Store (retail sales), and the Baronista (coffee shop) Supervise nontuition revenue streams, including summer camps, facility rentals, and afterschool programs. Support fundraising initiatives in collaboration with the Advancement Office. Develop and oversee thirdparty partnerships that enhance financial sustainability. Board & Committee Collaboration Serve as staff liaison to the Finance, Investment, Audit, and Building and Grounds Committees of the Board of Trustees. Present financial and operational reports to the Board, ensuring clear communication of key financial metrics. Assist the Head of School in implementing strategic initiatives and schoolwide goals.

Qualifications & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field required; MBA, CPA, or CFA preferred. Minimum 710 years of senior financial leadership experience, preferably in an independent school, nonprofit, or educationrelated setting. Deep knowledge of independent school financial models, endowment management, tuition setting, and financial aid administration. Expertise in budgeting, financial forecasting, risk management, and capital project planning. Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage crossfunctional teams and work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and trustees. Proficiency in Sage Intacct a plus. Proficiency with Paychex PEO (payroll and benefits), Ramp (expense management and AP), and Veracross (student information system) a plus. Experience with NAIS & ISAS accreditation processes and independent school operations. Excellent communication, analytical, and problemsolving skills. Commitment to the school’s mission, values, and community.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Fulltime, 12month administrative position with oncampus presence required. Must be able to sit at a desk and work on a computer for extended periods. Occasional evening and weekend work required for school events, board meetings, and financial reporting deadlines. May require walking around campus, inspecting facilities, and overseeing projects.
