Director of Technology Development (Innovation and Commercial Leader)

at Indiana University (IU) leads the Innovation and Commercialization Office (ICO) technology development activities, guiding partnerships between IU inventors, industry, and external collaborators to accelerate the transfer of university discoveries to the market. The role works across ICO and IU Research Offices to support a continuous workflow in intellectual property development, technology transfer, and commercialization, while engaging with faculty, research centers, and institutes to promote learning opportunities in technology development. Responsibilities

Manage day-to-day activities and processes related to faculty engagement for technology development, patenting, and research commercialization strategy. Oversee technology transfer processes, including increases in invention disclosures, provisional patent drafting, patenting, faculty outreach, technology market evaluation, and stage-gate evaluation of technologies. Evaluate industry technology markets and early-stage technologies; draft technology marketing materials; understand intellectual property processes and timelines. Ensure ICO technology development activities are integrated and coordinated to support researchers with service-oriented teams focused on innovation and commercialization. Serve diverse stakeholders in developing and commercializing transformational science; collaborate across university departments to create learning opportunities in technology development. Lead ICO training programs (e.g., Faculty Innovation Ambassador Program) and support activities of other research offices (e.g., ORC, ORA). Facilitate clear understanding of intellectual property protections and commercialization processes among university faculty. Develop and implement educational programs for faculty, research scientists, and graduate students on topics related to technology commercialization and innovation planning. Represent the University at state and national meetings concerning technology transfer, commercialization, and intellectual property. General Responsibilities

Contribute to senior leadership teams to formulate strategic planning and high-level operational objectives for Innovation and Commercialization. Establish long-term business plans, objectives, and oversee leadership staff who supervise ICO teams. Address escalated operational issues, including human resources and people management. Drive innovation and excellence; review and create policies and procedures; determine overall budget and review financial proposals with executive leaders. Identify grant and funding opportunities and develop business relationships within the university and with external partners. Stay up-to-date on new Innovation and Commercialization standards, technologies, policies, and procedures; promote adoption across departments and campuses. Oversee Technology Development and Licensing; ensure integrated and coordinated ICO activities that support researchers and commercialization. Support educational programs and initiatives for faculty, researchers, and graduate students related to technology commercialization. Education and Experience

Required:

Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field Preferred:

Ph.D. or terminal degree in a science-related field Required:

10 years of relevant experience Preferred:

10 years of experience leading or managing intellectual property development, technology transfer, and technology commercialization research; experience in academia, industry, or startups Skills
