Overview

The City and Regional Planning Department in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is seeking a full-time lecturer for the 2026-27 academic year. Responsibilities

Teach laboratory (studio) and lecture-format courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels in one or more of the following areas: community planning, urban design, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Lead community planning studios or urban design studios; engage in learn-by-doing and project-based learning as the preferred teaching model. Work with real community clients such as cities, counties, or community-based organizations as part of studio work when required. Required Qualifications

A master's degree in planning, landscape architecture, urban design, architecture, or a closely related field. Five years of professional and/or teaching experience in the field of planning. Demonstrated competence in urban design or community planning. Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and administrators from diverse backgrounds. Individuals with exceptional professional and/or academic distinction may be considered without the cited credentials. Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. or Professional Doctorate in planning or a related field is preferred. Demonstrated research/practice interests; alignment with the polytechnic tradition that promotes theory and practice through Learn by Doing. Professional and/or teaching experience includes supervision of project work. Special Conditions

The position holder is a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment. After a conditional offer, a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before start of employment. The university may withdraw the offer if the background check is not satisfactorily completed. An individualized assessment may be used to consider criminal history against job duties. Current employees offered positions on campus may be required to undergo a background check where required by law or designated as sensitive. One of five departments in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, the award-winning Department of City and Regional Planning offers two PAB-accredited programs—the Bachelor of Science in City and Regional Planning (BSCRP) and the Master of City and Regional Planning (MCRP). The department emphasizes land use, physical planning, urban design, and sustainability, with opportunities for interdisciplinary courses and strong links to the California planning profession.
