As a General Clerk in Akron General's Surgical Waiting Room, you will be responsible for opening and maintaining the surgery waiting room to receive patients, families and friends and supporting and maintaining communication between the OR, surgeons and waiting room guests regarding the status of surgical patients.
A caregiver in this position works rotating days/evenings from 12:00PM - 8:30PM or 5:00AM - 12:00PM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Open and prepare the Surgery Welcome Center to accept patients, patients' families and friends in a clean, comfortable environment.
Obtain the operating room schedule from the O.R. control desk while documenting additions and cancellations throughout the day.
Greet patients, families and visitors in a kind and courteous manner.
Log the family/visitor on to the O.R. schedule and inform them about the purpose of the Surgery Welcome Center and the location of complementary hot drinks, rest rooms, and telephones.
Distribute pagers to family/visitors explaining their use and function.
Document pager distribution and retrieve them when appropriate.
Distribute tracker numbers and instructions to follow the patient's movement throughout the day.
Direct patients to the appropriate Registration Clerk.
Check-in patients and enter patients as arrived in the Epic system.
Hand out specimen collection cup to applicable patients with explanation of its use.
Monitor patient check-in status and call patients when they are late to determine status.
Assign and give directions to the use of the lockers for patient belongings.
Locate family/visitors for surgeons when requested directing them to a confidential conference room.
Document times of surgeon's visit/call.
Notify family/visitors of patient delays and patient transfers to nursing units or discharge area and document times on operating room schedule.
Escort/direct patients and families to PSU, PACU, or other locations as needed.
Provide emotional support to anxious family members and assist them in any manner requested in order to make their stay pleasant and comfortable while maintaining an open line of communication.
Make hourly rounds to check on Welcome Center visitors and other department needs.
Perform clerical duties.
Demonstrate an understanding of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plans and procedures.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
High School Diploma or GED
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Knowledge of medical terminology
Computer skills
Customer service experience
