Overview

Director, Regulatory Science and Policy role at American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). This position works with the Vice President, Science Policy and Government Affairs (and Chief Policy Officer) to implement regulatory science and policy programs related to advancing cancer research and translating discoveries into public health benefits. The role involves engaging policymakers, cancer researchers, and advocates, addressing FDA-related regulatory science and policy issues, and supporting AACR initiatives to increase cancer research funding and inform congressional briefings. Base pay range:

$170,000.00/yr - $190,000.00/yr Major Duties and Responsibilities

Provide direction and support for AACR’s science and health policy activities and priorities; advise, assess needs, outline strategies, and drive initiatives to successful completion. Proactively identify science policy and regulatory science priorities and conduct policy analysis and development. Support committee and task force activities, including coordinating meetings and providing background materials and draft reports. Collaborate with the AACR D.C. office team, including the Chief Policy Officer and Director, Government Affairs and Health Policy, on crosscutting policy issues. Monitor, analyze, and assess legislation relevant to priority science and regulatory science issues. Prepare issue briefs and contribute policy articles for AACR’s policy newsletter and Cancer Progress Report. Help shape special sessions and briefings to educate Members of Congress and staff about pending legislation and cancer research issues. Keep abreast of AACR scientific programs and consider policy implications. Develop and maintain relationships with policy staffs of other organizations and coalitions. Collaborate with AACR staff in program development, communications, patient advocacy support, and related areas (e.g., scientist-survivor programs, Cancer Discovery journal). Attend and report on relevant scientific and policy meetings and conferences. Manage direct reports to achieve science and health policy goals. Position Requirements

PhD, MD, or other doctoral degree in a science and/or regulatory science-related field required. Ten (10) years of relevant experience in a science policy and/or regulatory science environment. Strong knowledge of cancer research and biomedical science, and expertise in science policy and regulatory science. Proven accomplishments in implementing complex policy projects. Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong interpersonal skills. High degree of judgment, initiative, and problem-solving abilities. Knowledge of government policies and procedures and the political process. Strategic thinker with demonstrated ability to carry projects to completion. Ability to analyze complex policy issues, build evidence-based arguments, and achieve consensus. Ability to interact with VIPs and all levels of management on complex policy matters, including executives, policymakers, and media. Ability to work independently toward goals while coordinating with AACR leadership as needed. Multitasking ability to work under rapidly changing deadlines and priorities. Proficiency with PC-based word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Organizational Profile
