Description Performs various laboratory tests and procedures while adhering to standard operating procedures on patient specimens to assist in the diagnosis, study and treatment, or prevention of disease. Duties include operating and maintaining laboratory instruments, preparation of reagents, quality control, data collection and reporting, safety and infection control, and collaboration with leadership on professional development and workflow improvements. May perform a range of tests in biological, chemical, hematological, immunological, immunohematological, microbiological and serological disciplines in a clinical laboratory. May serve as key operator for new equipment and procedures and may assist in development of new procedures and teaching activities.

Maintains documentation to comply with regulations, ensures correct safety data sheets are maintained, and may participate in safety audits. Responsible for inventory management and requisitioning supplies as needed. Performs calculations, reports results, and may conduct data analysis for quality improvement. May assist in education and orientation activities for staff and students. Maintains current certification and engages in professional development activities.

Responsibilities (illustrative)

Perform and interpret a variety of laboratory tests following SOPs across applicable disciplines.

Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and perform preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments.

Prepare reagents, monitor inventory, and assist with ordering supplies.

Maintain accurate documentation of patient information, test results, and corrective actions.

Ensure quality control and participate in quality improvement activities.

Identify critical values and report them according to SOPs; determine when results should be repeated or referred.

Assist in the development and validation of new procedures and participate in education and mentoring of staff and students.

Adhere to safety, infection control policies and regulations; participate in safety drills.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, or a chemical, physical or biological science.

Other bachelor’s degrees considered if coursework meets certifying agency requirements; degree may be waived for certain ASCP/HHS certified individuals.

Certification: MT (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), MT (AMT), MT (HHS/HEW), MT (AAB), generalist or categorical as applicable.

Two years of relevant experience required.

Physical Requirements Medium: 20-50 lbs; lifting up to 50 lbs; frequent standing/walking; occasional sitting; close eye work; physical demands vary by area.
