Medical Laboratory Technician - Per Diem, Variable (Culver City)
at Prospect Medical Holdings, Inc. This role performs pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical testing under California State Business and Professions Code, analyzes results according to patient population, and reports results to the appropriate provider or location. The technician maintains quality control and quality assurance, supports laboratory computer systems, and assists with inventory, clerical tasks, and customer-facing interactions in a professional and empathetic manner.
Responsibilities
Perform and record instrument preventive procedures and maintenance; document daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance per department protocol; perform and record quality control results; verify sample labeling and containers prior to testing; execute all test procedures per the department procedure manual; crosscheck results for appropriate correlations and report results accurately; identify and troubleshoot issues and notify the Director/Manager/Supervisor as needed; document corrective actions; enter and report data using the laboratory information system; participate in proficiency testing, inter-laboratory tests, and competency assessments; follow procedures for handling and proper disposal of specimens, reagents, and biohazard waste.
Actively participate in departmental process improvement and adhere to turnaround time (TAT) guidelines for STAT and routine tests; ensure HIPAA compliance and regulatory standards.
Receive and handle calls, document issues, escalate to senior laboratory management as appropriate; manage supplies including inventory, ordering, receiving, and stocking; deliver lab supplies as needed; transport samples/specimens to the appropriate departments for testing; print and deliver lab reports in a timely manner; follow downtime procedures for collecting and processing specimens when computers are down.
Identify patients and follow correct venipuncture procedures; collect and label specimens as outlined in each requisition; print collection batch and labels; adhere to infection control standards and ensure specimens are delivered to the laboratory promptly; process specimens for send-out according to procedures to ensure timely processing/dispatch.
Demonstrate empathy and professional communication with patients and families, providing compassionate service while maintaining privacy and professional standards.
Qualifications Required Qualifications:
Current California Licensure as a Medical Laboratory Technician
One (1) year of experience as a Medical Technician in the United States, if not U.S.-trained
Previous phlebotomy experience
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the hospital
Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English
Willingness to work variable shifts and overtime as required
Customer service skills appropriate to the job
Ability to identify and distinguish colors
Hospital Fire and Life Safety Card (Los Angeles City Employees only)
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with lab/hospital computer systems and software
Applicable clinical lab work experience with understanding of fundamental scientific principles
Bilingual skills to communicate effectively with patients and families
