Job Summary The overall responsibility of this position is to conduct engineering activities to support the AITX railcar fleet. This includes lease returns, car reassignments and repair of railcars in shops. Review and create appropriate repair projects for railcars per AAR, AWS, NACE and FRA recommended designs and regulations. This position requires the ability to perform independent research into new applications or improved techniques for repair. Support of the AITX Customer Service and Sales departments is a key aspect for this role. Job Duties Prepare documents such as car specifications, alternates, and cost estimates for such car alterations. Evaluate customer specifications to determine if AITX can supply or modify a car or car features to meet those requirements. Work closely with customers to determine their product requirements, improve reliability, product loading or unloading, handling, etc. Create projects, standards, and repair procedures to support the railcar fleet and ensure reliability. Work closely with customers to determine their product requirements, improve reliability, product loading or unloading, handling, etc. Work closely with repair shops for completion of repairs and railcar conversion providing detailed instructions and drawings for such repairs. Compile engineering data and conduct reliability analyses to define and improve service life usage. Work closely with repair shop personnel to reduce scrap, labor inefficiency, improve processes, etc. Utilize Lean and design for cost reduction techniques. Recommend design changes to improve quality, performance and reduce repair or life cycle costs. Be knowledgeable of the AAR and FRA regulatory requirements that impact the design of the product. Work closely with suppliers to approve their product's application to our design. Be knowledgeable of the quality assurance plan requirements as it pertains to engineering. Utilize CAD to develop models and drawing package required to fabricate the parts and assemble them into a completed product. Education/Experience Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical or Chemical Engineering preferred) Prefer 5 years + experience in Railcar Maintenance Engineering. Tank car maintenance and repair knowledge along with knowledge of FRA and AAR regulatory requirements is a plus.
